I don't do very much and just wondered about the rest of you. I can't afford a gym membership and thought I'd maybe start running, I've never done it before. Anyone know how you get started?

Hi MrsMc. I too don't do very much exercise, if any at all.

Stupidly brought a treadmill last October (can't afford the gym and would never have the time to actually go), put it in the garage with all good inentions of using it but as of yet I haven't been on it once

I really must try and do more exersice. On the rare occassion that I do, I always feel much better afterwards. It's just getting round to actually doing it

Have seen your thread about losing 10lb in 7 weeks but just know I won't stick to it so probably not much point in me joining you on there. Good luck though

Slowly.

Last year as part of my get fit for pregnancy (Ha!) plan I started running and managed to better my lifetime aim of running 5 miles by doing the Edinburgh 10K last May. I do like to have occasion to mention that.

Prior to that, even as a kid the furthest I ran was a compulsory lap of the hockey pitch. I started running for 15sec!!, then walking for 2 minutes, gradually building it up to run 5min walk 2min etc. It doesn't get easy until you can run for about 20 minutes, something happens at that point and you really can keep going.

I managed to do a 5K early in January, but haven't done much since then - am doing the Race For Life with my mum in June so must get training again.

Running is horrid at the time, but the buzz afterwords is fantastic, I do recommend it. I managed to get fit enough to do the 10K (did I mention I'd done that?) just running twice a week for 30-45 min.

I go to a V vheap council gym about 4 times a week (have been since September)and love it...I was rubbish at sport in school and now can actually run on a treadmill and enjoy it, whic is something I never thought possible.
I plan on running out of doors now the weather's better (but we live in a valley and the steep climb up does put me off!), go for it, you'll feel so good.

Exercise????

I walk about 5 miles 3-5x/week. Well, probably more than that because I walk to do most errands.

Do a really good exercise plan which was developed in the 60's called XBX. Do a google search and you should find it. It is basically 10-12 mins per day. It didn't make me lose weight but all my clothes were falling off as my body shape had changed so much. It really tones you and it's not difficult.

I do have a gym subscription because I love doing classes (never had the motivation to go to the gym by myself and working under my own steam).

A year ago I used to do a lot of aqua aerobics (3 times a week). It is great for toning but very much associated with ladies of a certain + + size and I was made fun of by a few friends ? I am 5?4?? and a size 10-12. However, you put into it what you take out. Our instructor would always give us options on how to make an exercise harder if you wished and you could certainly build up a sweat. I have always loved water and loved doing it.

In the past year though I gave that up (though I plan to start up again when I get pg) and took up ?land? classes . I now do aerobics on Tuesday, Body Balance - combination of yoga, pilates and Tai Chi - on Thursday and Pilates on Friday. All classes are an hour. I am not trying to loose any weight at the moment as believe it or not I lost quite a bit after the mc, but I am keen to keep fit and toned as much as possible. I sit in an office all day or at home in front of MN (!) so at least I feel I am doing my bit.

I have also recently taken over a tiny bit of my BILs allotment so I hope a bit of digging will help!

I don?t know much about running, my dad has been a keen runner for many, many years and you would never guess his age as it has kept him very fit. However, I am thinking of taking up walking now that the evenings are getting lighter. At least it is something I can do with DH as he is very bad at going to the gym. I was inspired by this article in the paper yesterday. What do you think? Maybe we could start a pedometer club?

Prior to getting pregnant I ran 6 days a week clocking up about 45 miles.

I'm now 14 weeks and still enjoy going for a run (but I've cut down to 25 miles per week).

If you want to start running go for it. I went from not being able to run for more than 3 minutes when I started (2 years ago) to running the whole of the London marathon last year without a walk break. I've also lost 2 stone in the process and dropped 2 dress sizes (although I'm enjoying putting some of it back on ).

My top tips are...

  • Start slowly - there are some great beginner training schedules on www.runnersworld.co.uk. Go to the Big Beginners link for loads of helpful information.
  • Get fitted for a decent sports bra.
  • Go to a running shop and get your running style analysed so that you get the right trainers. I had umpteen injuries to start with until I realised I was wearing completely the wrong trainers for me.
  • Find a friend to run with. It makes the time fly by (almost).
  • Enter a race (Race for life ones are a great start) so that you have something to train for.

    Enjoy!

I walk to school & back 5 times a week.
A bit of housework
Swimming twice a week
And maybe, a walk or bike-ride at the weekend with dds if the weather is good.

Not a lot more really if I'm honest!

I have started again recently and exercise 3/4 times a week - walking (with a bit of running) and swimming.

I'm trying to lose weight and build up my fitness.

There was a thread recently about starting to run. I just had a look but can't find it. It had some good links and tips.

Thank you all for posting, it?s really interesting to see what you all do. I think I?ve made my life so busy with non exercise things that it?s hard to find the time but I know that I must and that I?ll feel much better. I?ll look up all your tips and hopefully post soon once I?m on my way to being fitter!

Hello Furryfox I have a cross trainer in my spare room, maybe used it twice! Such a waste

Pesme I do remember you, how are you? thanks for the link; I?ll have a look at that at home. Good luck with the 5k, I am VERY impressed well done!

Rattling ? wow! You?re doing so well. I?m sure the pride in what you are doing must really help when TTC gets you down.

Hello Lizzylou ? I admire your motivation too.

Thanks miabl2 ? I?ll have a look at that too.

Hi Gillian ? I miss classes so much BodyBalance, Yoga and Pilates were my favourites as was spinning, got obsessed with that! I?ll read your article at home but could be persuaded to join a pedometer club. I try to get DH out for walks in the evenings too but he?s often too lazy

Thanks for the tips Betsycoe, I?ll look into those and congratulations!

Report

I joined a gym - they eventually phoned me the other day to 'see if you are ok as we haven't seen you'

I am going in next week for a 'refresher session' whatever that may be.

I felt like the school gym mistress had caught me out

I just hate exercise cos I know I should be doing it rather than I want to do it.

Report
skidaddle · 29/03/2007 14:39

lol greedy - shagging is GREAT exercise - better than those bum tum and thighs classes or whatever they're called

I do quite a lot of exercise (cycle to work every day, play football twice a week and go to the gym twice a week (but only because there is a great creche there for dd)

Good for the soul and keeps me sane throughout the ttc rollercoaster. In fact sometimes when I'm on the treadmill I visualise a little baby in front of me as if I am running to get him/her - keeps me going for an extra 10 minutes at least

Walk out the door and put the car keys in the car - does that count as exercise

Ok I do loads really, especially the effort to lift my cup of tea up to my mouth

TinyGang ? have to say, there are a million things I prefer to do to exercise. I?ve been known to get to the gym before only to leave again because I can?t be bothered!

Good for you Skiddadle!

LOL AlphaLolly I hate driving so prefer to use my feet!
