Hi all,

In a bit of a flap here! I think my period is around a week late, and have just done a clear blue digital test that says 'pregnant, 3+).

I have the copper coil fitted. Is there any chance it's a false positive?

Thank you!!

I would say no. You can get false positives after a miscarriage for example but for you to get a 3+ On a digital your HCG must be pretty high. I would get a doctors appnt and get yourself scanned.

3+ means you are 3 weeks pregnant or just over. The coil is not an effective form of contraception because it can move and in some cases be lost down there. Its very rare pregnancy tests are wrong just do another one to be sure. How are you feeling in yourself?

Thank you for the responses!

I have done two. Both say the same. I've just called the nurse to see what to do.

I've been poorly the past week - flu. So I feel nauseous and exhausted, but put that down to that. I have taken antibiotics, I am overweight, I am panicking!

I have a doctors appointment tomorrow morning - how long am I likely to wait for a scan?

You have to see the midwife first and then she or he refers you for a 12 week scan. Keep the doctors appointment so you can discuss with her your pregnancy.

I've only ever had false positives on the cross line ones (and only 3 in total after TTC for 33 cycles!).

I would think they will do a fairly urgent scan given that you have the coil fitted to see the position of the coil and to establish how far along you are (do you have any idea?).

I had a period around 5 weeks ago I think, so not sure what the officially would make me. As you can tell I am completely clueless!

I have a lovely partner, a nice house, a good job. However I am very overweight and was losing weight before trying next year. Just so overwhelmed!

I think you'd have a scan ASAP to check if the coil is still in it's place?

The trouble is that the breakthrough bleeding on the coil isn't classed as a proper 'period'. I can understand you feeling overwhelmed. I hope you get a scan soon so you know exactly what's going on.

I had a very heavy last period - they have been much heavier since I got the coil last year. Not sure if that makes any difference! The coil has no hormones so should be s real period each month I think.

Faith - the copper coil contains no hormones, but relies on an overactive immune system to kill sperm and the chemical reaction between sperm and copper to prevent pregnancy... You continue to ovulate and cycle as normal. It and condoms are the non-hormonal contraceptives.

OP, I am sure they will talk through everything with you! If you last had a period about 5 weeks ago, then you are about 5 weeks pregnant...

Oh yeah, I got confused with the Mirena! Blush

You should get an early scan to make sure it is not ectopic.

I have a doctors appointment in the morning so hopefully will find out there.

I am so very worried about something being wrong. I haven't been doing anything right for being pregnant!

How are you getting on? I had a scare on the coil and was advised that it could cause ectopic pregnancy and should be removed asap if pregnant.

I had a doctors appointment today - confirmed my pregnancy and also confirmed that the threads of the coil are still in place. I've been referred for an early scan - I have no idea how long it'll be.

Does anyone have any ideas?

I imagine the referral will be quick because of the increased risk of ectopic. Next week I would hope. I bet they ring you.

Fingers crossed! My doctor had hoped I might get seen today, so I do hope it's soon. I just want to know what's what - I am going crazy googling!!
