Did anyone have IUI successfully?

Thinking about trying IUI in the next few months. DH and I have been TTC for 7 months. He is 46 and I am 40 next month so feel like we are running out of time. We just had fertility checks (semen test) and I have just had a hycosy scan, bloods etc, all of which look good. I read previously that the success rates of IUI are not much greater than TTC naturally but our (private) consultant suggested this as the next steps followed possibly by Clomid/medicated IUI to speed things up a bit. Anyone have any experiences with this?

Out of 6 iui treatments I had 1 pregnancy unmedicated which ended in mc and 1 pregnancy medicated which also ended in mc.

I had one round of ivf at argc in London and am 36 wks pregnant.

In retrospect I wish I started with ivf and saved 2 yrs of heartache but easier said than done!

At 40 I would be goin straight for ivf. It was nowhere near as hellish as is thought it would be.

I'm starting my 3rd cycle of medicated IUI next week. The first two were weren't successful (period arrived before test day both times).

The reasons we went for IUI to start with are:

  • I've never tried to conceive naturally (same sex relationship)
  • Hycosy fine, bloods ok, regular periods, relatively young (27 when we started treatment, 28 now)
  • we're paying so wanted to minimise costs; 3 X medicated IUI has cost about the same as 1 X IVF

I won't be allowed to do another IUI so if this one doesn't work we'll have to move on to IVF. At 40 & proven non success naturally I'd head straight for IVF.

Good luck with whatever you decide.

Thanks both. Forgot to add, we both have 2 kids each already (none together) which were conceived with no issues so we clearly can get pregnant. And it's only been 7 months. I think we would move to IVF by the end of the year if still nothing but seems a bit premature.

Scooby, how was ARGC? We registered there but decided to go somewhere else at this point before rolling out the big guns. Sounds very intensive. I guess though if you're going to do it you may as well give it the best shot possible.

Forgot to say mine was male factor only as well...

ARGC was incredible, almost everyone I met there has either just had a baby or is just about to have one, most on round 4+. It was pricey but the most expensive round of IVF is the one that doesn't work.

If you can afford it (we are still
Paying off the credit cards) then I would go for it!

Good luck - feel free to pm me any questions.

Oh, I didn't have a problem with the intensity at all. I took 5 weeks sick from work and went to live in London. Once you have started your round the intensive mess makes perfect sense, they really are at the cutting edge of fertility treatment.

I refused immunes as well which made it much cheaper.

Intensiveness, not mess!
