TTC - how often should you DTD??

DH and I have been TTC for 5 months without success. Pretty sure (via use of ovulation kits and other signs) that we have been having sex on the right days but no luck so far. I tend to ovulate on day 12 (although last month it was day 15) so we usually have sex every day from day 9 or 10 through to day 16. I thought it was best to have as much sex as possible but am now reading it's best to have it every other day as too much sex can affect the quality of sperm which could be an issue for us as DH is 46! Are we better off switching to alternate days? If I ovulate on day 12, would it be best to have no sex on day 10 then sex on day 11 so there is sperm waiting, or sex on day 12 itself? Any advice very welcome.

We were trying for around the same time and thought every month we'd done enough. One month we even managed to DTD every day for 3 days leading up to ov, which got me a perfect score on fertility friend! However the month I got pg we only DTD every other day - 3 times in total during my fertile period. I was really gutted and thought we were out, but I was wrong! Good luck!

thanks baby, very interesting. Think we are going to DTD every other day this month instead of every day and see what happens. Fingers crossed but am not hopeful.

I'm aiming for every 2-3 days this time - hoping not to peak too soon though as I know it can get a bit raw!!

Hi everdene. Which cycle are you on? Are you going to try 2-3 days over your fertile time? Is there evidence to suggest that works better?

Hi Candy, in What To Expect Before You're Expecting it says that every 2-3 days around the fertile time is best for sperm quality - I'd recommend reading it as there are loads of tips for conception in there. I am on cycle 1 and still going into it with lots of enthusiasm!

We dtd twice when I got my bfp. In the whole month. Days 8 + 10 of a 24 day cycle.

Every day from about day 8 to day 13/14. Have you tried softcups(I swear by them, conceived first month using them on last two pregnancies

Thanks Everdene. I have a copy from when I had DSs, will dust off. I conceived DSI and DS2 pretty much on the first go but was 31 and 33 at the time, am now 39, 40 in July. Wish we hadn't waited so long before TTC this time. We both just thought it would happen straight away.

Thanks makingmiracles. So you are going for every day? What are softcups?

DH and I broke our own rule last night by DTD on day 10. Was trying to go for every other day. I am now on CD11. I usually ovulate on CD 13 I think. Should we DTD tonight or hold off until Day 12? My instinct is to DTD as much as possible or when you feel like it.
