We're thinking of attempting to conceive for the first time but our biggest issue is money. My husband gets an ok wage but I'm on a fixed term contract so wouldn't get maternity pay. Any advice would be appreciated!

Have you checked to see if you're eligible for maternity allowance from the government?

If you don't qualify for maternity pay from an employer for whatever reason, but you have been working, you may be eligible for some maternity allowance. There's a variety of qualifying criteria.

Its really confusing because I'm not sure if I count as an employee or worker. Basically I'm a teaching assistant in a secondary school but just on a one year contract and even though they're keeping me on for a second year I think it counts as a new contract. Need to talk to my union I think. Thanks for the info on the maternity allowance. I had no idea about that ????
