Hi Ladies,

I was just wondering if anyone has any side effects/symptoms from taking folic acid?

Me and my OH are thinking of TTC next year so started taking them last month in preparation. However for the last few weeks I have not been feeling myself.

I have a awful taste in mouth and I am completely off food with constipation (Sorry TMI) I have been like this for possibly the last three or four weeks. I know I am not pregnant as AF been and went last week.

Is it just me taking a dis-like to this stuff?

Is it just folic acid or prenatal vitamin? I never got on with pregnacare because of the iron, it made me nauseous. I switched to another brand (seven seas I think) and was fine.

Pregnacarevitamins made me ill when I took them on an empty stomach. I switched to taking them at tea time & been fine since.

Hi, thanks for the replies.

Only folic acid at the moment from the super market. I don't eat much fist/meat and been tested for anemia a few times over the years. So maybe it's the extra iron?... Is there iron in folic acid? Sorry if I sound 'blonde' lol

All I know is a feel like crap and it started a few weeks after I started taking them.

I don't know then. Maybe I should have a break from them for a month and then see if it all goes away. Not going to TTC till next year so it won't hurt stopping now for a bit.

Thanks guys Smile

Might be worth switching brands - I had no problem with the seven seas ones

I bought Tesco's Folic Acid and I had problems with it! Upset my tummy, made me light headed and I felt generally crap! So I stopped taking them and swapped to Boots Conception Care and was fine on them!

Thanks for the advice, I'm using the Sainsbury's own brand but I think I'm going to have to try something else as the taste in my mouth is awful! I'll give seven seas a ago and try taking them later in the day rather than in the morning.

I'm using Boots own Folic acid and had to stop taking it in the morning as it made me feel very sick, now take it in the evening after dinner and I seem to be fine.

Hope that helps Smile

Interesting.... I started taking folic acid (tesco own pregnancy vitamin supplements) at the beginning of January, with food, normally in the evening as I'd forget at breakfast time. 5 weeks after taking it, suddenly sick first thing in the morning before breakfast. 2 weeks later same again so poas, wondering if managed to have a contraception fail 2 months before planning to start ttc but negative. Sick again yesterday morning, only a week later. Maybe this is the cause? Maybe this is the real reason for morning sickness! Haha! Will try another brand but hoping this is the reason for the random sickness.

Hopefully it will be the reason for you as it's awful not knowing. I am on the pill at the moment so was really freaking out at first with how I was feeling. Then AF paid it's visit so I'm deffo putting it down to the folic acid. I only remember in the morning as I take it the same time as my pill. Can't wait to come off it in the summer! I'll try with my tea in the evenings now instead.
