Folic acid side effects?

Hello. My partner of 11 years and I are planning to start a family this year. I started taking folic acid last weekend (Saturday) and by Wednesday I'd started bleeding (my period isn't due until Sunday 20th / Monday 21st). This has never happened before. Can Folic acid make your period start early? I'm also feeling a lot more sensitive / emotional than normal. I know I'm not pregnant as we haven't started trying yet. It's just changes I've noticed since taking folic acid.

I didn't notice a change, however I gave one to my friend (she wasn't ttc) who had missed her period for almost 3 months and she came on, on the next day!

It shouldn't have any side effects. You get folic acid in food, it's just that most people don't get enough which is why you start taking it. The level you take is not that high either. It's probably just a coincidence. Keep taking it, because it's important for the baby.

Could you be pregnant already? You may have experienced implantation bleeding.

My cycles used to be anything from 34 to 42 days long. Then I started taking 800mcg folic acid every day and about a week later my next period came early - giving me my first ever 28 day cycle.

Ever since then my periods have got much more regular and now arrive every 31/32 days. My boobs also hurt a little first thing in the morning for 2-3 days before my period arrives now which never happened to me before. I also get weepy just before my period, over things which would probably have not previously bothered me.

So yes, in my experience I do suspect folic acid can have an influence on your periods.

Folic acid has no side effects, any excess is just got rid of by your body. I'm on the high dose and have no side effects. (It's the equivalent to 12 of the little pils!)

I don't thing Folic acid could affect cycles like that no. Bodies change all the time, probably just coincidence.
