I have an ultra sound at the weekend and was just wondering what to expect, as in what will they be looking for? what questions should I ask?

Been ttc dc2 since feb, had a complicated miscarriage at 9 weeks in June which took 5 long weeks to complete. At my final scan they saw a cyst just under 5cm and said 'no action required but to see gp if I get any symptoms'.

Since them I've had horrendous heavy periods, needing the loo all the time, bad bloating and gas and pains in my lower belly (so bad I needed a day off work), nausea and generally feeling gross and lethargic.

my cycles have been 28 days like clockwork since the mc and opks show I ov around cd18. But they stay positive for 3 days or so.

Will they just look for the previous cyst or will they also check my tubes and ovaries etc? I'm so worried about what they might find.

I'll also be cd25 so tww, will it affect anything if I am pregnant? Doubtful though!

Probably will be dildo cam so go prepared. They'll check your uterus, lining thickness and both ovaries. I think they struggle to visualise normal fallopian tubes because the structures are so small - they'd need to inject dye or saline to do that which would probably be a seperate procedure if needed.
Ultrasound would be safe if you were early pregnant but would be too early to visualise a sac. I had an early scan recently at 5+4 and they said that (5 weeks) was the earliest they'd expect to be able to see anything at all.
Hope it goes ok.

thanks bakingtins I had dildo cam a few times during my mc so prepared for that bit, it's not too bad. Also been told to go with a full bladder.

Well they might try tummy scan first - but have always immediately been told to go and pee and they get out the dildo!

Full bladder suggests abdominal scan as they always ask you to empty your bladder for an internal one. Which is surprising - I've had at least a couple of dozen fertility scans now and they have all been internal.

They will probably check the ovaries for cysts, measure the womb lining and check that everything looks "normal". I agree that they won't be able to see the tubes - there is a separate procedure called a HSG for that.

Hi Wagga,
Just thought I would let you know that I had an ultrasound this Monday and the procedure was fine, nothing to worry about.I have very similar symptoms to you, my GP referred me as she suspected that I may have an ovarian cyst.
I was recommended to drink 1.5 litres/approx 3 pints of water an hour beforehand which I did, despite being v.difficult! However, this helped the sonographer with the clarity of the scan so much so they didn't have to do an internal one (phew!). The sonographer told me there and then that she could see everything clearly and it all looked very healthy, which I obviously was very relieved to hear.
I assume my GP will contact me soon to go back and discuss my symptoms as they are still persisting. I think now that it may be IBS but will have to discuss what medication to go on whilst ttc and/or further investigation.
My GP also said that the scan, even internally would not interfere with my tww whilst ttc and would detect a very early pregnancy if by chance I was at the time of the scan.
Fx for you. Keep me posted with how you get on.

Thanks for your replies.

Sorry to hear about your symtoms too skyblue but glad your ultrasound was all clear. That must be a relief for you.

I was worried my doc might shrug me off and say it's ibs but I really don't think it is. Too much of a coincidence that I've only had these symptoms since miscarrying. Keep posting with how your next appointment goes. It's such a worrying time.

I got the letter through today saying it's a renal-pelvic ultrasound and it will be external. I hope they do internal too so as not to miss anything.

They also won't discuss any findings at the appointment they will send a report back to ny GP. I just know I will leave really worried now. I wish I could have some kind of answer tomorrow. Sad

update: I had my ultrasound this morning they wouldn't let my dp in the scan room with me which made me uneasy as I brought him for support . It was all good though, they will send full report to my GP but she said she saw all of my uterus and my right ovary which was clear and the old 5cm cyst has gone Grin . She couldn't see my left ovary because of excess bowel gas Blush . Anyway feels a relief. Thanks for the support and reassurance.

Still not sure what the pain and symptoms are all about...

Really pleased for you too! It's great when they can give some sort if feedback during the scan as the wait for results would be just as hard as a tww!

I feel so much more relaxed ttc this month knowing everything is ok and I hope you'll be the same. I've still got symptoms but ignoring them as much as possible. Maybe the excess gas was indicative if IBS for you?

Best of luck x
