help late 30s ttc and just found a lump in my breast

Sorry this is not a very happy subject. I found a lump in my breast last week and the doctor is sending me to see a consultant. I'm 35 and ttc for 6 months. I just wondered if its benign how long they usually take before they whip it out and so how long before I can go back to ttc. Obviously if it's not benign then it must be at least a year of treatment? And what you can do to see if you could conceive after that? I am very down. Can anyone advise?

Hi Mirry71 - So sorry to hear about the lump - it must be a very worrying time for you. I haven't got anything helpful to say, but just thought I would let you know that you're not being ignored!

I will try and bump this from time to time for you.

Someone else will be along soon, I'm sure.

I was 34 last year and was referred for a breat lump, mine was simply benign fibrocistic disease of the breast, ie simple terms lumpy boobs.

please try not to worry about what would happen if you had the Big C, most likely you will have some other easy to deal with lump
It is an incredibly stressful time, I worried myself sick about it.
When is your appt?

10 july first available appointment.
my GP was rubbish. He was about 12 and just spent time making notes on the computer. hardly looked at me, didn't say anything reassuring at all or tell me what was happening. I was in and out of there in 3 mins!
I know it's not importnt but I still think some doctors dont help themselves!

Hi

I'm sorry to hear of your situation. I just wanted to say that 9 out 10 Breast Lumps in younger women are benign & turn out to be cysts or fatty deposits. However there are acceptions myself being one of them. I was diagnosed with Breast Cancer when i had just turned 30 & my DD was 8 months old. I had a mastectomy, Chemotherapy & radiotherapy. That was 5 years ago & i have just been given the all clear. I was given the go ahead to ttc in Sept 04. Unfortunatly I may not be able to due to the chemo but as i have continued to have regular afs i take this as a good sign. There is always hope & i believe whats meant to be will be.

I really hope that you will be one of the 9. It is still quite uncommon in women under 50. I hope that i haven't frightened you.

I will be sending you positive thoughts.

Take Care

hi, i also have lump at moment annd am about to have it removed.

does it move when you press it?
does it hurt?
are there any marks around the area on the skin?

mine does all of this, had two lots of cells taken, a scan and showed nothing scary, however i am opting(on consultants advice) to have it removed so i can relax about it and then they can fina out exactly whats there.

i know how you're feeling

Hi Evesmama and JAG123
Thank you for your messages. Am so glad you got the all clear JAG123. It's always great to hear stories like that. Good luck with ttc!
Evesmama, it moves a little bit and so far not really had any pain (a little in the last couple of days but not excruciating and I think its more likely to be me imagining it because I am worrying myself ) Am sure it is fine - but when you ring up the doctor and NHS Direct and they sound serious it worries you!
I also cannot help feeling worried because I do not have any children - I only got married six months ago - and fear that I may now not be able to at all. But as you say what will be will be.

Mirry - I was going to say what JAG has put...most breast lumps are not sinister but that doesn't help you stop worrying does it?

If it is bad news the consultant will discuss fertility etc. and give you options, but remember the 90% of lumps that are just harmless cysts.

Sorry you have to wait so long for your appointment.

Mirry71..mine doest 'really' hurt, but feels like a bruise sometimes..call your gp back or maybe even the breast unit you will be going to and explain your worries and say its causing you lots of stress, is there any chance you can get in earlier??

lumps that move even just a little are normally either fatty deposits or cysts which can be removed!..i sound very strong here, but believe me im not, mine is still undiagnosed, but i feel its likely to be fatty tissue..chin up honey.xxxx

I found a lump 2 years ago when bfeeding DD (she was 8 weeks at the time.) Worried myself sick about it- I have never been so scared. After two scans and a biopsy it turned out to be a cyst, which I had drained (no need to have surgery to take it out and it didn't affect the bfeeding).

The odds are hugely in your favour, so hang in there until your appointment and good luck- will be thinking of you.

Hey thank you all for your messages I really appreciate it - and Evesmama good luck for you.
Pendulum glad to hear yours was ok - and glad to hear I'm not the only one who worries!
I am lucky - DH is being lovely and says he is going to come with me to the hospital and then take me out to lunch afterwards - awww.

Hi Mirry, I just started a thread and Evesmama has just directed me here. I found a sort of lump last Weds and am just waiting for my appointment for the breast clinic to come through. My GP said she wasn't sure what it was, it wasn't a classic lump, but there was definitely thickening and because of my age (44) she was referring me. I was really calm when she told me, which surprised me, but every now and then I freak out about it.

Good luck both of you.

Hi, i am 35, and have had a huge, what feels like a ping-pong ball in one of my breast for years, since about 23.

I have had a scan years ago and they couldn't diagnose it, it isn't cancer, it isn't fatty tissue, it isn't a cyct.... but they all acknowledge it's presence. LOL . i had the option to have it removed, but haven't. As in my opinion, how can they remove something they can't see or know what it is.... so i leave it alone. It feels bruised most of the time, and grows more with hormones and when i keep feeling it ! So just to re-assure you.... if the doc's don't think it's serious, relax, it's prob a hormone thingy, but worth having it looked into all the same. Good luck
xXx

( oh forgot to add) because of my age, mamogram's can't be used , so i had ultra sound on mine.

Report
EvesMama · 03/07/2006 09:58

i also had ultra sound as under 35's go into a different level of care normally.if they were worried though im sure a mammogram would be available

JAG123 · 03/07/2006 17:36

I would 2nd what Evesmama said about pain & movement. Mine was totally painless & didn't move. I think it depends with the mammogram. When i was diagnosed they used a needle biopsy & an ultrasound. They said that in younger women the breast tissue could be too dense to pick anything up with a mammogram. But in all my 6 monthly checks since i have always had both.

I hope you are feeling ok Mirry77 the waiting is so hard. You sound like a really positive person. I will be thinking of you on the 10th.

Hey Surfermum - am thinking of you. It's such a pain waiting for your appointment - I jsut want to go and storm the hospital now!
I think everyone has to freak out a little now and then - it would only be natural...I did to the poor NHS Direct woman - who wasn't to blame for my doctor not telling me anything!
Let me know when your appointment comes through. Thinking of you.
Rachee -hmm that's really intriguing - just one of those weird and wonderful things I guess that you get in life!
And JAG123 - thankyou for your kind messages again. I wish I was more positive - still at least its taken my mind off ttc so DH gets a break......!

The waiting is so awful isn't it? I had a really bad day yesterday and got all tearful and anxious. I'm sure it was related to me being really tired, so had an early night and feel so, so different about it all today.

I just want to get it scanned and know what's going on. I tried ringing yesterday to see if my appt had been made and ended up speaking to someone who was really offhand and said "oh you'll get your appointment in a couple of weeks". Talk about empathy for someone who's worried. She wasn't the person who made the appointments though so I got straight back onto out patients and they say they haven't had the referral yet. I'm going to ring again in a couple of days.

It's funny, I work in the NHS and used to book appointments and yet now it's me waiting for it I want it yesterday . And I think I'm the only patient they've got .

When's your appt Mirry? I bet the waiting is even worse for you because you want to get on with ttc.

It does really surprise me. I keep telling myself that people have bad days but I had a really offhand response when I first rang the clinic (I rang back) and as I say my GP was rubbish and didn't tell me anything... but yes I guess I do think I'm their only patient!

My appointment's next Monday. It took over a week befoer the referral letter came, and then it was a good 2 weeks before they had an appointment free.
Good luck with waiting to hear about yours! You should get the referral soon I am sure x

Hi Mirry

sorry only just saw your post but just wanted to echo what others had said and share my story as one of the 9... (for which I am extremely grateful)
I went to my GP about 3 years ago about a lump on my breast (I was 38). I was seen by a locum and she said it was bone as it was near my sternum. It didn't seem to move and caused no pain so I went away and stopped worrying about it (although i didn't think I could be so stupid as to not know my own flesh and bone). Anyway a couple of months later I fell pregnant and through my pregnancy the lump grew, I was scared to go back in case it was the big C but also 'cos I had lots of irrational thoughts about losing the baby. My mother had also had a double masectomy in her 30's. I was also told they probably wouldn't investigate it due to the pregnancy anyway. As soon as my daughter was born I went back to the GP who agreed it cetainly wasn't bone! I was referred to the breast clinic within a couple of days (the speed of which also scared me and convinced me it was going to be all doom and gloom). Thankfully it turned out to be a harmless cyst. I breastfed my daughter for nearly 20 months and during that time it disappeared. At my checkup they said that breastfeeding hormones can cause that to happen.
As Coggy said, 90% turn out to be harmless cysts. I wish I had known that percentage at the time. Sadly, its still a bit of a taboo subject so we don't get to hear enough positive outcomes and experiences of women who have had lumps etc.

Wishing you all the best for next Monday - will be thinking of you. ((((hugs))))

and a (((hug)))) to the other ladies who have posted here and who are going through similar worrying times
