Please talk to me about folic acid...

Or the dosage I was taking to be precise.
Before I MCd the GP put me on 5mg daily, rather than the usual teensy dose. Apparently because I am overweight and older! Anyway. I carried on taking them after I lost the baby, thought it couldn't do any harm as we are planning to try again. Recently, I've felt a bit odd, like my intestines are a bit swollen and sore. Now in sure that one of the uses of folic acid is to help food absorption. Could this high dose be upsetting me?

Hi Saggy!

I'm really sorry, but I don't know. This bump might get someone who does, but you can always go and ask a pharmacist - they will probably have a fair idea about the side-effects and should be able to advise you in a general way.

I don't think there are any gastro issues with higher doses of folic acid - I've been taking a high dose (10 mg) in preparation for IVF . Do you know about vitamin D and its role in fertility? Most of us in the northern hemisphere are deficient and it does play a big role in fertility. Some GPs will test for it or you can send away a finger prick sample to this NHS lab www.vitamindtest.org.uk/ - it costs £25. A quick google will tell you alot about Vitamin D - I would really recommend it if you are older. You then can decide how much to supplement based on the results. HTH.

Hi, there is a natural fertility expert that posts on another site that I have seen, she posted a while back about supplemets to take when trying to get pregnant may well be worth dropping her an email or posting a question to her? Hope this helps, I will include a link to one of her posts and the end of the message. Take care xx http://forum.prideangel.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=532

Have you had a blood test to see your folic acid level?
I was taking folic acid regurlarly and it said on my blood test results that I had too much and to stop any supplements I'm taking immediately.
This was a test done privately.

I havent. Ill have to ask the GP about that.
