HSG while pregnant

I really hope someone out there can help cos I'm driving myself mad with worry at the moment. I had an HSG yesterday, day 11 of my cycle. Had a pretty heavy period 11 days ago so thought no way I could be pregnant. Doctor doing the X-ray said I and some spotting prior to the test, which is unusual for me. After sleeping on it I decided it was actually a bit worrying so did a pregnancy. BFP. I can't believe it. After 18 mths of trying I can't believe I'm pregnant now. Has anyone had this happen to them or know of anyone who has? There is very little info online. Seems risks are miscarriage, ectopic pregnancy or birth defects from radiation but also some cases of healthy births. Doesnt say likelihood of any outcomes though or whether it's advisable to have a termination. Am waiting for a callback from the docter and feel sick to my stomach :-(((

Oh gosh poor you. I don't know, but bumping this for you. I know of one lady on here who did the same, and is now midway through pregnancy.
Congratulations as well! How horrible having waited so long and now you can't enjoy your bfp..

Good luck, let us know what the Dr says x

Thanks so much for responding keepitgoing. I was in a right ole state this morning. Slightly calmer now but still worried. I did a search on this subject before i posted and didn't find anything. Will have to try again and see if i can find the lady you're talking about. It would be really good to l know what info she found, if any.

The doctor told me all we can do is wait and see what happens. The most likely adverse outcome is miscarriage. As such he had me in for a blood test this afternoon to measure hcg and see how many weeks gone. Will do another test on Monday to see if pregnancy is progressing or if its not/miscarrying. If progressing then ultrasound a week later. The thing I'm most worried about is long term damage though, but he said that there are not really any recorded cases of that, although that's partly because this doesn't happen often. It was still fairly re-assuring to hear though. He said he was going to double check that there haven't been any recent cases since he last looked.

So wait and see...and keep everything crossed! Thanks again x

I will keep it all crossed for you. If you must be about 6 weeks then hopefully it will have well settled in...

I just had my hsg today, so hoping for the magical improved fertility now.

Not easy, this ttc malarky, is it...

It isn't is it? I hope you do see the magic result following HSG - it does sound like a lot of people do. Fingers crossed for you too Smile

Hi, I remember reading about this. I wish I remember who she was (a thread I just saw a couple of times but didn't post on). I hope someone sees this who knows- perhaps it's worth opening another thread asking? It wasn't that long ago. Good luck to you.

Right. Don't panic. In all honestly, everything should be fine. If your 'period' was 11 days ago then the egg will be nicely embedded by now and the chances of a miscarriage being caused by the hsg are very small. I've had one mc prior to DC, have one DC and another on the way who was also accidentally hsg'd.

Yes, I am the MNer keep was talking about :) I had an hsg on day 12 of my cycle, after a completely normal period. On about day 23 I was feeling a bit dodgy, and was supposed to be going on a seriously boozy night out, so did a test which was positive. Very positive Hmm. Booked in for 7 week scan due to fertility clinic referral, and got the shock of my life when we saw a real baby on the screen instead of a flickering heartbeat! Turns out my 'normal period' was a false period and I was actually 10/11 weeks pregnant, not 7.

Basically everyone I've spoken to in the fertility clinic/ante-natal specialists has said that the hsg is not something you should really worry about affecting the baby, although they obviously would prefer it if you weren't pregnant when it's performed, for obvious reasons! The dye is (pretty much) harmless, which is why they're happy to use it internally. It has happened before at my hospital, and the outcomes of the pregnancies don't seem to have been adversely affected by the hsg - it's normally other factors that cause the problems. But yes, there isn't really much research on how hsg's affect pregnancies, because it's supposed to be a diagnostic tool for infertility.

I'm currently at 22 weeks, the baby was pretty much perfect at the 20 week scan and apart from feeling like utter crap from week 7 to 16, I've been fine! Please try to relax - easier said than done, I know - and see what happens now. You have to be positive too, you've gone and got pregnant naturally, so you know your body can do it. Congratulations!

Smegs you're a sight for sore eyes - Thanks SO much! I am breathing one massive sigh of relief here. I'm so glad you replied! Grin. I guess I'll still have to wait and see if a miscarriage occurs but tbh that's a normal worry anyway. I had a mc the year before I had DS so i wasn't completely confident with him until after the 12 week scan. My main worry was lasting effects on the baby if the pregnancy continues but if you've had re-assurances from lots of professionals and you're doing well yourself thats good enough for me! I will be quietly excited instead of not so quietly terrified from now on Smile.

Thanks again and again and again! And best of luck for the next 18 weeks and beyond xxx

(and thanks again for helping me find her ladies!)

Yes, thanks smegs, that's the best of MN right? Happy days, dontsay. I've seen some nonsense on here over the past few days, but this is the best kind of exchange. All the very best to you both.

You're welcome! I know how it feels, because it is so rare we are dealing with unknowns and that's terrifying. I'm lucky in that I didn't realise I was pregnant until I'd actually seen the baby, who was quite obviously healthy according to the sonographer. I think that went some way towards reassuring me that all was well. Further scans have confirmed that minismegs is developing normally so all lingering fears were allayed. Of course you never know for sure, but I'm as positive as I can be that all is well.

I would just say that you must take any pains in your abdomen seriously until you have a scan that confirms the egg is in the right place. I'm sure the egg would have been well out of the fallopian tubes by CD11, but ectopic pregnancies can happen to anyone whether you have an HSG or not. I expect you'll be given an early scan to make sure the egg is in the right place, which should give you some reassurance. Take care.

By the way, thanks to keep for flushing me out on the Brooking thread!

You're right, not being able to find anything out online today pushed me over the edge. I only had the briefest of panicky conversations with the doc on the phone (not least cos I was at work huddled in the entrance to the loos trying not to let anyone hear me talking about cycles and spotting and whatnot) which obviously didn't fill in all the gaps and put my mind at rest. But now you have so I'm a much happier bunny! Good advice re: chance of ectopic pregnancy. I should be speaking to doc again tomorrow morning re result of blood test so will ask when he thinks best to scan.

And yes purple I totally agree - this IS what mn should be about. And I'm delighted with it Grin

How are you feeling today? I hope all is well.

Just realised that I made a mistake in my previous post - I knew I was pregnant at the scan, but not how far along I was!

Hey Smegs. I'm not bad thanks. Doc called this morning and said hcg was 300 which would be 4-4.5 wks pg. my calculations say it should be 5.5 weeks. So either pregnancy is on it's way out or could be just cos i ovulate late in my cycle. Wont be able to tell until they test again on monday. Have had mild stomach pains since the HSG which I know is a normal side effect but I also know could be a mc. Am doing pretty well not thinking about it all anyway - except at 5.30am this morning when Ds woke me up! Still, a trip to Chessington World of Adventures with 3 friends and our 7 kids between us meant not much time for worrying today! Thanks for checking in - its really nice of you Smile. Hope you're Friday has been fun! Have a good we. X

Ahhh Smegs it's lovely reading your story again!

I guess if there was a big risk to the littl'un the dr would do a pregnancy test before doing the HSG.

Best of luck Dont!

Weeeeeell, I was advised to do a test the day before, just to be on the safe side. I never bothered to tell the rat-smackers as it was negative, and of course it would be on CD11, right?! God knows what was going on with my body at the time.

Dont I hope everything goes well for you. HCG is a bit of a tricky one, we're all a bit different - hopefully it will keep going up and you'll have good news on monday. Have a great weekend :) Just to confuse you you'll probably have mild cramps/stomach pains whatever the outcome, I think the early weeks of pregnancy are designed to make us think a period is just around the corner Hmm

smegs you had a negative test the day before despite being nearly six weeks... How odd

I wasn't told to do a test, it just said to make sure you're not pg.

dont I've heard hcg levels vary a lot between women too so shouldn't be used to date. Roll on Monday...

DontSayWhatSayPardon · 21/07/2012 11:41

Thanks ladies! I also wasn't told to do a test, just asked if I could be pregnant. So with my less hysterical head on I guess that means its not a catastrophe if you have an hsg while pregnant. Encouraging comments re hcg too - I don't really know anything about it so it's good to hear that a low-ish reading might not mean anything. I keep getting waves of nausea today, which is interesting. Not common for me, except in early pregnancy....we shall see.

Will let you know how it goes on Monday. You've all been stars to help out Smile

Have good weekends all. Hope sun shines (for a change) wherever you are!

Hi,
I know this is an old post but I am in the same situation!
10 weeks pregnant, had an HSG at 3 weeks accidentally.

All looks okay as of now, but does anyone have any updates on the health of their babies after an HSG?

Thank you!

I know this is an old post- but it’s the only thing I can find on the internet of people with first hand experience... @DontSayWhatSayPardon @Brar123 @smilegirl2016 did this all work out well for you?
I had a HSG on Wednesday, assumed CD 9 after a light period last week and two negative pregnancy tests. Ob called today that my bloodwork shows pregnant and I got a positive pregnancy test at home. Just looking for more feedback!

Hi ilovetheocean7
i had the test and found out the next day I was pregnant, I spent the first 20weeks pretty nervous until my full anatomy scan. I now have a mentally and physically healthy 2yr old. Everything was fine. My OB tried to reassure me that if it was a grace situation they would have had me take a pregnancy test before the scan to be absolutely sure.
good luck
