Hi

I've had this type of surgery (its proper name is laparoscopic ovarian diathermy) for PCOS and in my case I was successful in conceiving a couple of months post op. It is not the same at all as a laparoscopy which can in some cases just be exploratory in nature. A lap is usually performed if endometriosis is suspected.

Ovarian diathermy is not a cure for PCOS as the cystic follicles associated with this condition do return eventually. I know of some other women who have had this op and have conceived as a result; also I know of women for whom this op has remained unsuccessful. With diathermy the surgeon uses an electrical laser or needle to puncture the cystic follicles on the ovaries. This can correct the hormonal imbalances and kickstart ovulation.

I would make sure as much as you are able that the surgeon is very experienced in performing this type of surgery on PCOS patients as it has a steep learning curve.

I was a day case and came out of hospital the same evening. The fear of the op I had beforehand was far worse than the reality and it is keyhole surgery so no really visible scarring.

Any other questions just ask.

Wow thanks I think it is the diathermy one as what you are describing sounds like what the consultant said and I have pcos they haven't said they suspect endemetreosis so should be ok. Did you conceive naturally afterwards or did you take any
Medicatios?

I'm waiting for this too, pinkapples. Just waiting to hear from hospital about date. I haven't been on clomid first, however. In my case, the consultant wanted to try drilling first.

I conceived without any medications two months post op.

Was never given clomid as my LH level was sky high (cons said in my case it would not have helped me as clomid encourages more LH to be produced).

PCOS patients can respond very well with regards to ovarian diathermy but again I would state that it is not always successful.

Wishing both you and PatientGriselda the very best with your forthcoming op.
