Okay so as I understand it the Mirena has a barium oxide coating so it shows up on xrays but it may not show up on a scan because it's quite small and can be embedded in the wall of the uterus if it's gone walkabout.

Had it exited the womb it would need to be surgically removed, lest it decide to embed say in your kidneys. (This would be bad).

Chances are it is still in your womb.

Now it is possible for a dislodged Mirena to stop working - because the manufacturers cannot identify which bit of it's action does the job, the thinning of the lining of the womb, the coil hormones or the thickening of the cervical mucous. So it's the interaction of the three, lose the coil positioning the cervical mucous etc may thin etc.

However it's extraordinarily risky to attempt to conceive with one in.

First of all your chance of ectopic pregnancy while a Mirena is in is very high. Which could kill you or permanently render you infertile.

Secondly, if the embryo does implant in the womb you will be strongly advised to take out the Mirena so the baby is not exposed to it and indeed injured by it. This has a risk of miscarriage, but conversely it is not known whether your baby would be damaged if you go to term with a coil in. Certainly when women have discovered they are in 2nd trimester with Mirena in, they have been very strongly counselled to terminate the pregnancy :(

IIWY I would be going back to my GP asking for a referral to the gynae - urgently - to get it removed under a GA - they can have a good root about and find it and remove it that way without you having to lie on a table with several people poking you with forceps trying to peer up your nethers.

ok thankyou. Sounds like it may be worth us also using condoms until we know more then (though surely the nurse, dr, sonogropher should have perhaps warned us of this?). anyhow
i would like to thank you for your kind and knowlegable reply! i hope you havent been through the same experience in order to learn this
thanks again!
