Tip of the day

If your DH says he wants breakfast in bed, chuck a sleeping bag onto the kitchen floor. MamaG

Quote of the week

Bucharest on the potentially perilous pitfalls of pregnancy: "You get so used to grown men whose first names you don't know shuftying about up your nethers that you have to chant to yourself, like a mantra, in the dentist's waiting room, "Don't take your pants off, it's just teeth this time."

Recipe of the week

Porpoise's red berry pavlova: lashings of strawberries and cream for Wimbledon finals weekend - with the ace addition of a crunchy, chewy meringue base. Serve with panache and await a grateful chorus of, "Ooh, I say!"

Stockings = seasonal food and one small toy (preferably a puzzle type thing) in our house. This started because we have the rule that you can't open presents until everybody is up. If you don't wanna get woken up repeatedly from 4am onwards with begging requests for present opening time now, they can have the food and a little something to keep them distracted while they watch cartoons and you can sleep in a bit later!

Do the same for adults. Although toy more likely to be a tricky puzzle or desk toy.

We all get stockings here:

Everyone gets:
an Oxfam unwrapped present
satsmas - to be eaten before breakfast
fair trade dried fruit / nuts
fair trade chocolate

Over the years I have stuffed in: [with only DDs]
playmobil figurines
fisher-price roll-a-rounds
crayons
colouring books
cheap dvds from Woolies during their £1 sales
play doh
craft supplies - glue, glitter etc
bath bombs
nail polish
lip gloss
plastic fruit
whoopy cushions [hate them!!!!]

Some stuff is wrapped - such as the playmobil small figurines but not everything

FC does stockings and the 'big' present here. We put the tree up at end of November [dont do live trees] and put presents from relatives under as they arrive esp as grandparents live in Canada. DD1 has never tried to open any. DD2 is now only 2 so we shall see how long this lasts grin

In our house only the children get stockings, not the adults, and Father Christmas only brings the stocking presents not the under the tree ones.

The stockings have stuff like:

-art and crafts stuff
-Foamy Soap in a can and novelty bath sponge
-Play Mobile/Polly Pocket figure
-socks/pants
-choc coins/Xmas choc lollies
-hair accessories
-silly toy like those squishy/gungey balls, whoopee cushion, fart putty
-books
-gel pens/colouring pencils
-mosaic-type colouring book
-slinky spring
-DD usually has a quartz/crystal type thing (you know, the rough piece, not polished)last year it was a chunk of amethyst
-some sort of glittery/girlie storage pot for DD
-a couple of Matchbox cars for DS

I have to say that the 99p fart putty has consistently been the most popular stocking filler for the past 3 years!

The core 'must haves' are book, CD, DVD.

Then for DS, some packs of whatever the latest phase is for collecting things (so go gos this year)! Then a few sweeties and some hawkins bazaar type things. New gloves. A few sweeties.

For DD, a few smellies from lush (which of course stink the house out)! Maybe some nail varnish. A small claire's accessories voucher. Sweeties.
The stockings are from us and the things on their christmas list are from FC.
I love these threads!

We never had stockings as kids either and one year I decided we should so on Xmas Eve I got 3 of my Dad's socks and hung them over the fireplace to my parent's total panic! I think we just got an orange and some money in them!

My Dad makes up for it now with the grandchildren though - he has a stocking for each of them and FC leaves things for them all.

In our house the stockings and toys under the tree are from FC. Presents from anyone else are from them. DS gets a present from us too.

Have NO ideas for this year as yet though.
I have two DS's (11 & 9), I would usually put in something along the lines of

socks
undies
new pencils/feltips and some sort of colouring thing/activity book
selection box
a small game - last year it was 20Q
top trumps

I hang the bag on the inside of their bedroom door. The boys will get up, get their bags and go into my mum and dad they usually go through the contents sat on my mum and dads bed.

When I was a child during the 1960's, my mum used to fill one of her old nylon stockings for me!!!!! Sadly, with the arrival of nylon tights, I didn't get two legs worth of pressies!
There are certain things I always put in:

a book (Mr men/little miss quite good size wise)
pants (multipack split and used to stuff spaces)
choc coins
stickers

Other things over the years (bearing in mind I have a girl and a boy) are:
bubble bath
lip gloss
keyring
whoopee cushion
necklace
toy car
rings
knight and horse
cup
fancy straw
christmassy lolly
tights
gel pens
notepad
bobbles/clips
stamp and ink pad
book marks
bouncy balls
marbles

Plus probably tons of things that I can't think of.

So far they have a mr man/little miss key ring each.

Pointy you have inspired me to start a shiny new thread on a new name i agree bluebell is rubbish.
Always do stockings for my parents and DH.They contain

Satsuma
Nuts (except DH who gets Haribo as he's allergic)
Some kind of Kitchen utensil
Some kind of household freebie (last year got some dishwasher tablets ahnded out beforew a concert. It's a standing joke bewteen my Dad and I)
Fancy pants/knickers
Socks
Miniture
Magazine
Chocs
Handful of shiny coppers (as in the money, not the police)
Packet of tissues
Hankies
Toiletries
Small Honey/marmelade (usually pinched from a hotel brekfast in the months beforehand)
Bookmark

It takes some thinking about and I start planning in June/July. My mum has always put thought into our stockings so we give the same back. In fact I enjoy it more than shopping for the bigger presents, as the stocking contents are a complete surprise. Also have a seperate box so all those "offcuts" of wrapping paper from the bigger pressies, can be saved and used to wrap the stocking ones.

Actually Blueball would be a great name. Much better than Bluebell.

Dont worry im thinking of changing my name to that Blueball now what do you think?

Runs for cover before Pointy comes back.grin.
Oh dear - Pointy, I kept looking at your thread wondering what on earth you meant. Doh! blush

Thanks BlueBELL - I've been reading Yr 11 essays on screen all night and my eyes have gone squiffy, if that's any excuse.

Lol at Blueball.Boots have lots of mini wall.e toys for £8.00.I also got the dancing wall.e.My two ds love him though i do wish they had called the robot something else as the two ds are saying wall.e all day.

someone answer so I don't keep seeing the name Blueball.
Ooh ooh Blueball - I want a WallE toy please! Where, where? I love him, he's so cute and robotty.
always have

a bag of chocolate coins.
Satsuma
small soft toy in the top.

then last year
bouncy ball
little racing cars
polystyrene airoplane (thing that slots together)
pack of top trump cards
kaleidoscope
bubble bath
little pack of haribo sweets.

DS2 was only little so I bought a big bag of plastic fruit and wrapped them individuality so he had 10 parcels to open but it cost me £1. smile (plus the essentials from above)

I do grown up stocking for DH and he does one for me.. nice little things like face cream and little pedicure kit, chocolate, socks

We have stockings in bed before breakfast and other pressies aren't opened until we get back from church so it keeps DS1 busy until it is time to go to church. smile

what, just fruit and nuts, beanie?
Everything in the stockings is wrapped, except the tangerine and the bag of dried mango (which they are still embarrasingly excited about each year!).

Other than that a stocking for a teenage and pre-teen girl this year might include some of -

- chocolate coins
- a new flannel
- new toothbrush and paste (nasty pink, non-mint flavoured for dd2 if she is very lucky)
- something small with Emily Strange on: a purse, or notebook or something - they love the stuff but it is jaw-droppingly expensive
- silly badges to go on jackets and school bags
- bath bombs
- nail varnish for toes and toe divider things
- "posh" shampoo - ie posher than Boots own brand but not posher than Charles Worthington!
- gel pens
- "cool" postcards with stamps on, ready for writing and sending
- something stupid from Hawkin's Bazaar - wind up babies, or racing grannies or something of that ilk, for racing across the table round the Christmas dinner
-
should have said... stockings are technically santa territory wink
Fruit, nuts.... People still do this, don't they?
By   Thu 02-Oct-08 21:18:14 Add a message | Report post | Contact poster
Im doing my two ds's their first stocking this year they are aged two and four.Im putting in;
Chocolate coins
Book
Dvd
a pack of matchbox cars
Small wall.e toy
Apple & satsuma
toy cars,
smallish toys that they've eyed up in tescoes (last year was cheap walkie talkies, a sportacus doll and a stuffed dog)
lots or art stuff (crayons, markers, paints)
a few sweets (but not many as they will be eaten before breakfast and all hell will break loose)
Yes, stockings are from Santa, big presents are from the people who bought them and piled under the tree before Christmas Day itself. Then stockings magically filled on Christmas Eve grin

DS gets stationery (some from seal sanctuary this year due to exciting new obsession hmm), sweeties, character pants, little playmobil figures or small lego kits, an annual (it'll be Scooby Doo this year), one of those comedy pooing plastic animals (reindeer or polar bear). And this year he's been collecting little fossils/gem stones so some of them too.

Adults get a chocolate orange in the toe of their stocking, none of your satsuma nonsense grin - although I do actually love satsumas. Those little bottles of wine are nice too.

a miniature bottle of something alcoholic or a half bottle of champers

Some chocolate or a chocolate orange in the toe of the sock

Something smelly from Neals Yard or similar (dh likes their shaving soap)

Socks/boxers

A silly little book - one of those ones you find by the tills in book shops

Some kind of silly thing from Iwantoneofthose.com or similar.

A cd/dvd

Golf balls/tees

No, stocking fillers don't get individually wrapped here.
They (obviously) must include chocolate coins, but other than that tend to be practical things like pants / socks / swimming trunks or goggles / hairbrush / pens / notebooks, etc. maybe a fancy flannel or nail brush.

My kids got in theirs

In our house, FC does the stocking and we put one wrapped present from us donstairs under the tree for the children (but our children are only tiny) , along with the other presents that are exchanged, like Vanilla Pumpkin.

Tree presents are silly things, hung on the tree that must be very cheap but can be useful and are distributed after roast but before pud.

I don't wrap all the stocking thingies, just the best one or two things in there.

Ah dd1 knows FC doesn't bring big presents to our home (though he might to others...). Last year all she asked for was a bicycle bell. It was fab. FC bought her that one.
By   Thu 02-Oct-08 20:45:57 Add a message | Report post | Contact poster
I wrap most things, but not satsuma or choc coins.
At least I do so far (dd1 is 5)
My Mum claims to have wrapped our stocking presents every year, but I only remember the year she had 20 for lunch and three extra children in the house and her DH was away till Christmas Eve and she nearly had a breakdown and that one year she didn't wrap the presents is the one I remember grin.
By   Thu 02-Oct-08 20:45:54 Add a message | Report post | Contact poster
I do the same as Vanilla, stocking presents from Santa and the others are from the people that bought them.
By   Thu 02-Oct-08 20:45:19 Add a message | Report post | Contact poster
hmmm... think stockings AND big prezzies will all have to be from fc as ds wants fc to bring him a HUGE playmobil crane hmm
By   Thu 02-Oct-08 20:43:08 Add a message | Report post | Contact poster
most large shops like Woolie's or even supermarkets will actually have an aisle of merchandise dedicated to filling stockings, so look out for those.

does everyone wrap EVERY filler gift, or just put them in there?
By   Thu 02-Oct-08 20:42:40 Add a message | Report post | Contact poster
Ah, this is a HUGE MN debate.
In our house just the presents in the stocking are from FC.
All the tree presents are from the people who bought them and will be put under the tree (to make it look nicer) when they are wrapped (week before Christmas???)
FC does not get big presents in our house.
This is not the case everywhere I discovered on my first Christmas on MN grin.
For ds (aged 7)

apple
satsuma
choc coins
stickers
stationery items
paperback book
small note pad
Playmobil "special" figure
bath foam
sponge/flannel
socks

and other small items - last year we got a few things from the RNLI shop, as he is mad on lifeboats, so stuff like a compass, lifeboat magnets, etc.

You never had a stocking sad.

I put in
a Christmas story book,
knickers and vests,
hair bobbles,
chocolate money,
satsuma,
comedy pen/pencil,
activity/colouring book,
card game,
stickers,
cheap plastic toy (pony, farmyard animal, dinosaur etc).

Cheap but lots of little things to be unwrapped.

we never had stockings as a kid, so are the stocking gifts from santa as well as the big presents in the sack downstairs?

<puzzled>
always put an apple and a satsuma in the toe, some nuts depending on age of child, bag of choc coins, socks, pencils, novelty soap, playdough or plasticine, little nic-nacs from hawkins bazarre and a small cuddly toy in the top

i buy bags of sweeties like dolly mix, pic n mix and chupa chups and divide them out into cellophane bags and use them to fill stockings.

homemade treats.

alcohol miniatures for the grown ups.

trial sized toiletries.

chocolate coins.

glow sticks, glow in the dark stars.

this year, a plastic mug for DD1. a ceramic soup bowl for DH.

nuts.

satsumas.

cup o' soups, those disposable cups of Malteasers/Aero/Brovil that you just add hot water to.

here are some good ideas.

lots of small presents - some useful/practical and some silly

for our wee ones we might include stickers, sweets, stationary, socks, pants, toothbrushes

they usually get an animal/dinosaur from ELC to add to our collection

other gifts in the past include bibs, hairbrush, postman pat/bob figures, jewellery, penny whistle, face cloths.

Plus always a tangerine and a penny in the toe!!

I love stockings!

We always had an annual. I used to love them. And you have to put in a sugar mouse.
You MUST put in some:

Chocolate pennies - you know the ones covered in gold foil?
Satsuma
Nuts - depending on age.
Socks

And then

Anything else that you might like to get from other people's lists!
Oooh, never thought of one for adults!
