Chicken Pox?

WomanwiththeYellowHat · 20/05/2010 20:08

My DD2 (17 months) has a scattering of small red blanching spots on her tummy (5 ish), one in her belly button (!) and one on her bottom. Her sister (just 3) has one of what looks similar on her neck. Neither seems out of sorts, neither has a temperature, neither is off their food or seems ill at all - they just have these little spots?

I thought the pox at first, but I thought they would be ill too? We are all off to the GP first thing, but would welcome any suggestions as to what it might be if not the pox (or indeed if this is just how the pox first appears?)

Thanks

My DD has just developed chicken pox - started very similar to what you describe. She was (and pretty much still is) otherwise fine. So much so that we were in denial until she woke up this morning with alot more spots...definitely Chicken Pox! I am hoping it doesn't get too much worse...

Could well be. A friend of mine described the course of chicken pox as

Day 1: Hmm, could that be chicken pox?
Day 2: Yes, that's definitely chicken pox.
Day 3: Bugger me, how many spots?

If it is the pox, you should know in the morning.

If you think it's chicken pox, PLEASE don't go and sit in the regular GP's waiting room; if you call ahead and explain the situation the practice should be able to provide you somewhere else to wait (with a large bell to ring and a sign saying "UNCLEAN"). In fact if I suspected chicken pox I wouldn't go to the GP at all. If it is chicken pox you'll know very soon and there's nothing the GP can do about it anyway, and if it isn't chicken pox then you'll know that very soon and can take them to the GP at that point.

My DCs weren't ill at all before the spots came out (well, DD had a completely unrelated ear infection, poor thing, but they weren't ill from the pox)

Thank you - I am planning to retire soon in an attempt to get some sleep to steel myslef for the possibility of being sequestered at home with my two little darlings for umpteen days....

Thanks (& esp. for sensible GP advice - will give them a call in the morning)

If they turn to blisters with liquid in them, they are The. Pox.....

Me and ds have recently had the pox and both of us were well before hand and for the first day or so. I was feverish from day 2 but ds was just a bit off colour and tired. Both of us were covered by day 3 though!

GP can give you liquid Piriton for your wee ones and some cream called Dermol which reduces risk of bacterial infection and takes the sting out too. Bicarbonate of soda in the bath is nice too. Piriton is a life saver, I have to say. helps sleep too thank God! Calpol for temperature too of course and/or ibuprofen if they are allowed that.

Hope that if it is the pox, it is over quickly. I was relieved as ds had a moderate dose - hopefully enough for immunity but not so bad that he was really ill.

If it is the pox, then hopefully it sounds as though they both have it at the same time - so at least your quarantine won't be too extended. Dds had it when they were 1 1/2 and 21/2. The spots had crusted over after 5 days, so we didn't have to stay in for too long. We were all totally shocked however when 10 days later dh came out in the pox (really really badly)!

Also it was quite hot when dds had it, and they spent a lot of time sat in a paddling pool, with bicarb in (soothes the itching), and running around naked - so hopefully if the weather stays good, it may not be too horrendous.

Hope they are both ok.
