DD has major abcess!!

DD is due for a pulpotomy on her upper molar on the 14th.
The Dentist said it looked like it was beginning to abcess, so gave me a prescription for ab's to take 2 days before treatment.

This morning she has woken with a large blister like lump in her mouth right next to the tooth. She is not in pain, just told me she had a weird lump in her mouth.

So, should I get the prescription filled tomorrow in case it gets worse over the weekend, or hold fire to save having to get another prescription for the following week.

Feel really bad she is only 5
She is going to lose the tooth isn't she - dentist said it might be a possiblity even with the treatment

I had one of these in my gum, it was right above the tooth. It popped so I just kept draining the gunk off and took the antibiotics, I still have the tooth so there is hope!! Get the prescription filled ASAP.

I would think it best to get the prescription filled rather than waiting.

My 5 year old DS fell and chipped his front tooth when he was 2 and over the years it has blackened and now looks awful.

A week or so ago he complained his gum was sore and above the chipped tooth it was completely swollen. Took him to the dentist the next day and it was an abcess. The dentist had to scrap away some of it and gave us antibiotics to be taken for 5 days.

The nerve is damaged and we don't know if the adult tooth, when it comes in, will be damaged or not.

Don't feel bad, you didn't cause this. But I know what you mean - I do feel guilty about my DS1 even though it's not like I pushed him over causing his tooth to chip and damage the nerve!

I'd phone your dentist (they should have a a message with an out-of-hours number if they're closed) for advice. An abscess that is forming a large lump needs treating.

YES it needs dealing with

abcesses can be horribly painful

I'd rather give birth again than have another abcess!

is it a second tooth? if not, would it be better to just get rid of teh tooth, i wonder?

I got through to NHS direct last night who advised that if she wasn't in pain, to sit and wait as they can go up and down in children of this age. more urgent when painful.

Anyway this morning it dos seem to have gone down a bit but still there iykwim - but there is now an obvious black hole in her tooth, before there was nothing to see.

I will see the dentist on Tuesday, if it gets painful or swells again, she is to have the AB's

I just hope she will be OK til the 14th though - really cannot see them saving the tooth though
