DS is 12 weeks old and as soon as he gets over 1 cold as soon as we go out and see other people/babies he gets ill again.

Am i best to steer clear of these groups etc or is it best that he gets colds etc now to help his immune system develop?

Any advice would be appeciated.

I'd probably not avoid groups altogether (for your sanity more than anything else!). I have a 4 month old DS3 and I've been taking him to groups since he was tiny and he's been lucky he hasn't had a cold / tummy bug yet (but caught nasty chicken pox from his big brothers). But even if he had I'd still take him.

DS1 went to a nursery from a fairly early age (not this young) and was ill constantly for a year. It was horrendous. However, now he's hardly ever ill (he's six now). So I do think getting bugs does build up their immune system to some extent.

Have you mentioned this to his pediatrician? Does it seem to be just a normal cold or does he get really chesty with it? I had a friend whose ds was like that and the doctor finally told her that if he got more of those types of infections in a short amount of time he would be at higher risk for asthma.

Thank you.

I'm hoping the same happens with my DS as did with your DS1 although hopefully without him being constantly ill for a year.

My DS seemsed to be continually sniffly from when he had his first vaccinations, for about a year. I was on maternity leave I took him each week to a breast feeding support group every week, for my own sanity as much as anything. At 6 months I went back to work, and he went to a childminder - the snuffle quotient shot up again.

He is now 10.5, and absolutely fine. He has been off with the D&V bug for the last few days, but this is the first time off school for well over a year.

So don't worry too much - think of it as training his immune system!

Incidentally, we were sent home with inhalers etc after one doctors visit when he was a bit chesty. DH googled the drug involved, found it was not suitable for the under 12s, and so we didn't use it. Again, he was fine in a few days, and is absolutley fine now. (If the chestiness had persisted I would have gone back for a more suitable drug, I hasten to add!)
