My DD suffered from this and did for a few years. Whenever she was rundown we got it, particularly when her tonsils flared up. The pain was in a similar place to early appendicitis and I was sure that was what it was but she was checked a number of times and swollen glands were diagnosed. She's 7 now and we haven't had it for a while.
Lots of rest seemed to help, coupled with painkillers and antibiotics for the underlying infection, if there was one.

It is called adenitis. It is similar to when the glands in your neck swell up due to a throat infection. It is often due to a virus and is very painful. Often associated with a viral D and V bug I think.

My db had this but it was misdiagnosed and ended up having an unnecessary appendectomy( sp) .
