Eye patching

Have just been told we need to patch DD's lazy eye - she has been wearing glasses since Nov but they are not helping enough with the weaker eye. I was so shocked by how little she could actually see when I patched her stronger eye

I would love to hear some positive stories from people who have had to do eye patching on their kids. As neither DH or I wear glasses, all this has come as a bit of a shock!

Loads of threads over the years about this - if you want to do a search for more reading. There is a mumsnetter who makes felt patches that slip onto the glasses in different designs/colours.

the 'lazy' eye stops working with the other eye as the brain gets confused. Patching the good eye makes the 'lazy' eye stronger and makes it work.

My ds had glasses at age 3 (he's now 8) and had a patch for 2 or 3 years.

I used to do 2 hours in the morning (we're up at 6!) and 2 hours after school/playschool)

It helped loads and even now he still wears glasses at least BOTH eyes are working together.

It doesn't bother him wearing glasses, it's a natural to put them on in the morning and be able to see.

there are really nice NHS glasses these days as well. we pay £10 for thinner lens, which IMHO is worth it.

dd patched for a year or so for 2 hours a day which dropped to only 1 hour as the eyesight improved. She now has pretty much equal sight in each eye.
