Vaginal bleeding in toddler - help! (detailed, sorry!)

My DD (23m) has had a rash and a bit of a temp over the last couple of days. She woke up in her cot this morning absolutely covered in poo. After dh and I cleaned her up, she sat on our bed without a nappy on. When I lifted her up after a minute or so there was a reddish stain on the covers, about the size when you put your finger and thumb together to make a circle.

I wiped her and the was a little bit more blood, I thought from the outside of the vagina, but couldn't be sure. DD was happy as usual but complained when I wiped, although I don't usually go "in" so much, iyswim.

There hasn't been any more blood, I'm just wondering what to do. A&E? Drs tomorrow? Or could it be just a scratch or something? I don't want to subject her to an examination down there unless it's necessary

TIA

Is it nappy rash? It often bleeds.

I'd keep an eye on it but am suprised at your comment about subjecting her to an examination down there. Why would that bother you or the person who is doing the exam. it certainily won't bother her.

Thanks - glad to see I'm not the only one on mumsnet first thing Sunday morning!

kreecher - tbh I hadn't thought about it, and then read this article (after googling 'vaginal bleeding toddlers') which warns that it can sometimes be a traumatic experience requiring sedation . You're right, she probably wouldn't mind a bit.

Thinking about it though, if the bleeding was before the poo, it would have been wiped away when we cleaned her up. So I think it could have either been irritation, or a bit too clumsy cleaning on dh's part (maybe he caught her with his fingernail?) - we had both just woken up.

Don't want to be hysterical or neglectful!

castle - she has had some spots recently but not full blown nappy rash.

Charlieboo - thanks We do have an out of hours drs but they're at A&E and it's still a pretty long wait. I also have a 4mo with the same temp and rash that DD had, so don't really want to leave her (bf) or take her!
