Please does anyone recognise these symptoms?

One of my 8 yr old twin sons has vomited frequently since birth. I've never found out why and last night he had another 'epsiode'. This is vomiting unrelated to any virus.

But I realised last night that there's one v clear sign that often precedes vomiting - he becomes 'hyper' - physically 'speedy', louder, shrieks, misbehaves, talks a lot.

Got me thinking that this might suggest some kind of epileptic thing going on - but he doesn't go blank etc and I don't really know anything about epilepsy and might be on the wrong track.

Anyone reading this that is familiar with a pattern of vomiting (usually just as he's dropping off to sleep), after being extra 'hyper'???

Sometimes it's seemed he vomits if he hasn't had a poo for a couple of days or he also has complained of feeling dizzy on lying down to sleep and then vomits. I wondered then if it were to do with his digestive system. But then I realised how I can sort of 'predict' he might vomit because his behaviour in the time leading up to an episode is 'hyper'.

I don't think being hyper 'makes' him vomit - although this might be the case. It seems to be the other way round - like the hyper behviour is a sign that he's going to vomit.

Please can anyone recognise these symptoms and suggest something? No doctor has ever come up yet with any answers except to rule out brain tumour last summer when he was vomiting early morning with headaches too.

Don't think it can be migraine - or could it? - because it's happening often when he's just gone to bed, relaxed and has no headache at all.

have you looked at a stomach migraine (abdominal migraine)?

Hi

I was a carer in a nursing unit for Adults and children with severe Epilepsy.

Im just goping to list a few a couple of things i came across, this isnt what your DS has x

Hypermobility syndrome... which is a rare epileptic attack in children.

Cyclic..which is abdominal epilepsy or abdominal migrains (which my son suffers from although it seems to be calming down as hes older now, 2 and a half)and alot of children grow out of this.

Or it could be a form of Reflux, it doesnt just happen to babies. Id go back to your Dr and ask for more tests, as you say he seems to be "hyper" just before.

In the residents i cared for we could tell when alot of them were due to have a fit where they would convulse, but alot of the time they would just have a headache or be sick which was how there epilepsy manifested, known as a "simple partial".

Keep a diary of any foods he eats, bowels movements and what he seems to do just before hes sick, the way he acts etc.. this will help you GP to rule things out much quicker and get you the help you need.

Dont worry though as it could just be stomache related.

HTH xx

i hope this isnt alarmist..its not meant to be...there are mild forms of autism that can cause this and if the doctors are not coming up with any answers i would ask for it to be looked in to. It is just the shreiking and hyperactivity that lead me down this road as a close friend works with autistic children and e suggested it as several of his clients have similar problems.

please dont worry at this post.i am just passing on info from a firend as i am sure you must be at your witsend and searching for answers

Thank you for these ideas. Foxinsocks and Bigmumma09, you both suggested abdominal migraine, which I'd never before heard of. Thanks for the link to the article. DS however doesn't get abdominal pain - just massive and suddent onset nausea on going to sleep at night....BUT last summer, DID have abdominal pain and headaches at times. I wonder if he could now be getting a milder version or something?

Alypaly, I'm not freaked out about possible autism. DS1s non-identical twin brother is 'lightly touched with asperger's - ie falls just below any diagnostic criteria but has many similarities. It'd follow that twin might have residues of something too and he does have attentional/ processing problems at school.

The thing is, DS1 only sporadically does this hyper behaviour, usually when overtired etc too and at other times is WAY more 'normal' and like all his peers than his twin.

I think I'm just going to have to return to the GP. I HATE going as they already ruled out things last year, by referring us to the Consultant....

It could be reflux....my twins were born premature at 34 wks and 5 days and whilst had good Apgar scores and didn't need ventilation, were in hospital with me for 19 days, as they couldn't feed and had to have nasal-gastric tubes. DS1 has always, always been picky over food and throw-up quite often at mealtimes - unrelated to the night time episodes - if there's too much in his mouth, if there' an unpleasant texture, if he doesn't like the smell...He eats v v slowly and since infancy, finds it hard to take in chewy foods and much prefers soft ones.

All this could be something to do with his oesophageal/ stomach tract, maybe and be causing the vomiting at night.

Thank you again for the ideas.

Id definatly go back to your GP and YOU mention these things and ask for it to be considered, sometimes they need a push! I did with mine as i took 11 months to find anything out and as soon as my DS got on his meds he was fine.

Good luck and let us know how you get on, oh and do the diary xx
