Swollen tonsils and strange voice

For the last day or so DD 3.4 has sounded most peculiar when speaking - as though she has been fitted with a new set of dentures or as if her tongue is too big. DH claims not to be able to hear it but I definitely can. I checked her throat today as best as I could and saw that the back of her throat (presumably the tonsils) were quite swollen with little lumps on them and a little bit of white. I immediately called the GP as we are snowed in and have no way of getting to the surgery 6 miles away down icy country lanes. He didn't seem particularly alarmed or think that it was tonisllitis as DD is quite fine in herself apart from the strange voice and said that I should take her in in the New Year if it was still the same.

Has anyone got experience of this or anything similar?
