Rash in Otherwise Well 21 Month Old?

My 21 month old DS developed a rash on his legs about a week ago - red spots, quite angry looking, and raised. He had a bit of a cold before that, but no other symptoms at all - eating fine, sleeping fine, perfectly cheerful. The rash doesn't bother him at all either. Now the rash has started to appear on his arms, and it seems much redder and angrier there. However, he's still absolutely fine apart from the rash. The GP twice said it was eczema, and just prescribed acqueous cream, but it's done nothing - and others have said it looks nothing like eczema, so I took him back. He's now having antibiotics for a week, and steroid cream for two weeks. I'm not convinced either are having any effect, but we've only been using them since Friday evening.

Anyone else with similar experience of rash in an otherwise perfectly well baby or toddler? I'm worried it's going to spread onto his torso or up to his face, the poor little thing, and it's awful that they don't seem to know what it is

viruses or a strep sore throat can cause rashes. Have you done the glass test just to be on the safe side

Thanks alypaly - yes, we did the glass test as soon as it appeared about a week ago, and it's still blanching, so we're not concerned about meningitis - especially as he's completely well in himself.

I think it may well have been kicked off by the cold/cough virus he had as you say, it's just so frustrating that three different GPs can't say for sure what it is which means we have no idea if the antibiotics or steroid cream will do anything at all!

dont use a steroid cream on such a large area.it sounds as if it will go and if its not really troublesome i would let it run its course. Could be a week to 10 days. Is it like a scarletina type rash.

Just thought i'd come back to let you know you were right! We saw a dermatologist and it's a viral infection rash - she told us the name but it escapes me

However, sure enough, the steroid cream did precisely nothing, despite being prescribed by the GP! - so you made the right call - thank you
