Please tell me about croup

I have just come back from Dr with DD2, who has an infection in both ears and croup.

I don't know much about croup, other than last night terrified me. The cough was horrific, she was hallucinating and then vomited.

Please can you tell me your experiences of croup.

It's the same as pharyngitis in an adult, but because a childs pharynx is smaller, the swelling narrows the airway so much it can affect the breathing.

Both my dc's had it a few times when they were little, but it is something they grow out of.
If there is next time take them into the bathroom and run the tap or shower to make plenty of steam.

try steam or else cold air - stand by an open window at night and let them breath it in. Croup is a real pain but you do learn to cope with it. Kids generally have grown out of it by the time they are around 7yrs old - my dd did.

the cough normally only lasts 3 days sounds worse than it is bless em my ds has had this few times

keep room ventilated sit in steamed room before bed keep calpol going in to relieve sore throat

keep them dressed cool with head slightly raised cough normally gone after 3 days it really does sound worse than it really is but its always so worrying

It's a horrible, frightening thing. What worked like a dream when DS2 had it was the Buteyko Breathing method - if they're old enough to understand, tell them to close their mouth and take tiny 'mouse breaths.'

I did it with him, and it calmed him down and cleared his airways - he was still hot and exhausted, but at least he wasn't struggling to breathe.
