So what can you do to help alleviate coughs?

DD3-2.7yrs has a cold and the cough has hung around. It is chesty in the morning and she brings up lots of phlegm and then coughs intermittently all day and has a bark now at night.
She is sleeping but it is horrible and worrying to sit and listen to her.
So cough medicine doesn't work.
The doctor can't do anything for a cold.

Is there anything I can do.

Raise the head end of her bed.

Use steam to help soothe the cough.

She is up on an adult firm pillow.
Does steam work? I know I always feel worse in the shower for instance.

rub in lots of vicks onto her chest, especially at night.
It's old fashioned but it works.

Just reading old threads saw advice to put vicks on feet and then socks!

My throw-the-works-at-it method is:

Raise the head of the bead
Rub vicks on chest
Put a saucer of water on the radiator
Olbas oil on a tissue near the head of the bed
Give a sip of water & Calprofen just before sleep

If further coughing during the night then more sips of water and more Calprofen if appropriate (long enough between doses etc). I also find going in and changing their position (usually to lie on side) can be enough without actually waking them.

Frankincense essential oil is very soothing for a persistent dry cough - a couple of drops on the pillow, or in a diffuser at night.

Hope dd is better soon!

yep vicks on soles of feet, then socks.

sometimes my dd gets those coughs, where nothing helps and you have to ride it thru.

I found the vicks on feet seems to relax them, and helps calm them. Vicks on chest always makes my dd's cough worse, like it aggrivates it as the fumes are too strong iyswim.

dd's cough lasted 3 weeks this time.

A big spoonful of honey. Manuka hiney is great for coughs and sore throats.

A warm drink at bedtime like ribenae have seems to help dd .

Avoid milky drinks .

I got into a real state at the beginning of the year over DD's2/4 coughing at night and we bought a dehumidifier and were given an air purifier . There have worked and I would not be without them now am always amazed at how much water and crap is sucked into them .

Hope she gets better soon there is nothing worse .

Ha I knew I shouldn't have written that.
Just had to put her back in bed. A bit of coughing but she has gone back down.
I thought it was humidity you wanted when they had coughs, hence the saucers of water and I have in the past put a wet towel over the radiator in winter when the heating is on.
Honey is an idea.
