Sory, I forgot I posted this.
Right
DS1 - ahs an overbite. Orthodontist said he won't do anything till DS1 is older (he saw him last year when he was 10). However, ithink its got more prominent and when Ds1 is eating he seems to eat in the side of his mouth because he says it hurts when he tries to eat at teh front.

DS2 - now he has got 2 teeth still up in the gum. His baby teeth have fallen out of 2 places, but there is no room for the new teeth to come through. Also one of them there is an abcess on teh gum which fills up with yellow puss and DS2 says it hurts. Now the orthodontist again said he wouldn't do any treatment till DS2 is 12 (he's 10 now) but surely that can't be right, he can't have those extra teeth in his gum for 2 years? One of them has started trying to come through and seems to have stopped. We were in the orthodontist surgery for all of 5 minutes!

I can understand your concern, and it can be very difficult to know what to do. Generally orthodontics cannot be started until the child has lost all his baby teeth and the permenant ones have come through. By then they can assess fully the extent of the treatment needed.

However sometimes if there is a problem, ie some of the teeth cannot erupt intervention earlier may be necessary.

DS1 - sounds as though his overbit may be traumatic (the bottom teeth are biting on his palate) but is very hard to tell without seeing him.

DS2 - Is the abscess over one of the unerupted adult teeth? When did he see the orthodontist and does the orthodontist know about the abscess?

If I were you I would try to get an appointment with your regular dentist so he can assess the situation and talk to the orthodontist if necessary.

Hope this helps, sorry if its long and confusing!

They have appts next week with dentist. DS1 for a filling and Ds2 for fissure something. The orthodontist knows about Ds2s abcess, but didn't seem bothered,l its not on one of the unerupted (great word) teeth, its between it and another one.

DS1s overbite isn't that noticeable, but I have noticed a chnage in it and also in the way he eats, he puts food into the side of his mouth, makes no effort to eat from front.
