dd2 having repeated mild earache..should I go back to dr's or see what happens

OK, a few weeks ago, about 4-5 I suppose, dd2 complained of earache at nursery so we got a dr's appt, he prescribed anti-biotics and she finished the course (but didn't complain of any more pain after that first day - she is 3 1/2 but can be very stoic). About a week after that she complained the other ear was hurting. Took her back to docs, and he said in fact both ears still looked very sore, and that the low level of pain didn't mean it wasn't a bad infection, he prescribed a different anti biotic. Again, she only complained of the pain once. She finished that course about a week ago and same again today 'ow ow ow my ear hurts'. We have all had this horrid bug thing going around that is on and off for weeks (sore throat/flu like symptoms) I have had mild touches of earache and dd1's ears look really waxy but she says they haven't hurt at all. I guess I will take her back, but wondered if anyone has any thoughts?

Yes take her back but I dont think another course of anti biotics is going to be the answer. I would get her referred to the ears nose and throat specialist at the hospital.

Children get earache for all kinds of reasons.

  • blocked sinuses sometimes cause ear ache like pain
  • something lodged in the ear
  • Something lodged in the ear that in causing infection (maybe a small fly) it can happen.
  • the cold weather i.e wind can set an ear ache off.
  • A bcterial infection
  • burst ear drum
  • very waxy ears.

I would def have her referred as my mum did to me when I was 4 as I was constantly getting earache. She used to have to take me to A&E.

I think my trips to the Hospital inspired me to get my medicine interact qualifiaction.

It could well be this. Does she pull on her ear, lie on that side all the time, put her hand over it?

Not that I've noticed - it has just been these three seperate times she has complained of it - it hasn't lasted or seemed to be painful following on from the initial 'Ow my ear hurts' and being a bit miserable for the next hour or so. I was only because the doctor said they did look quite sore that I have been worried, and obviously because it keeps recurring.

tell your dd hope she's better soon, i get ear infections and they feckin' hurt. its amazing when the gp look they always say its nly a mild infection. i think, wow, ifthis is how much a mild infection hurts, i'd hate to have a strong infection.
