Hi

My 7 month old (breastfed and on solids also) had what seemed to be a tummy bug earlier this week - v off-colour and not himself, and threw up about 4 times in 24 hrs. Called NHS direct who said ride it out and keep an eye on his hydration levels which I did - he could keep some food and milk down

Yesterday he was a bit querulous and tired (pretty much like I would be if I'd been sick the day before), but no vomiting.

Today he seemed absolutely fine in the morning, quite back to his old self, but not v hungry, and after lunch and a milk feed he threw up again. By this time doctors is closed, and I wasn't too worried so just gave him a little more breastmilk and a pot of yoghurt a few hours later - both fine.

Just fed him supper, and then some more milk, which immediately came up again. I think it's the milk that's doing it - but what should I do about it? Am going to try feeding him a little bit later on and do it that way, but am now getting worried....sorry, first time he's been sick like this..and worried it will go on for ages and he'll start to lose weight.

Is this the normal course of things? WHat do you do about keeping him hydrated if milk won't stay down? (he's sceptical about water from bottles etc though will take a tiny bit) Should I take him to the hospital or wait till the doctors tomorrow morning?

Stick with the breast milk, it's the best rehydration stuff going and enough should stay dwon to keep him hydrated. The solids are probably just a bit too much for his tummy at the moment and tbh not having any for a few days until he's better won't hurt him.

I took ds3 to a&e once for this kind of thing. He vomited for 5 days - not really loads, but was hardly eating or drinking. They took him straight in at triage - he was actually fine, but they saw the risk of dehydration in a baby as extremely serious.

I would say it is much more likely to be the solids that did it. Breastmilk is the last thing you ever need to stop with illness. My friend's ds had a terrible stomach bug recently and could keep nothing down - not even sips of water. She continued to bf him and he never was sick when it was just bm. She is convinced that is the only thing that kept im out of hospital as he was so ill.
