OH JOY. We have nits. What can I do for ds (4yrs) as shampoo says not for under 6yrs?

I've conditioned and nit-combed all our hair and dd, me and dh have all had nit shampoo in overnight so hopefully we are now nit free. It said unsuitable for under 6yrs without medical supervision on the bottle though and ds has very sensitive skin so I didn't put any on him. I'm just watching him scratch his head (I haven't found any nits on him yet...) so what I can I do for him now?

We used Hedrin on DD2 when she was 2yo.

Spray it on leave it on overnight and then wash out in the morning.

Hope that helps.

I think Hedrin is the one we have that says not to used under 6yr olds, also he has very sensitive skin so I'm not sure about using nit shampoo on him at all

You need to do it again in a week's time to kill the ones that have hatched out since this morning.

you're much better off just wet combing with a nitty gritty comb with a cheap conditioner. do it every other day

agree combing regularly is the best way ...

I used a bug buster comb and conditioner - it absolutely works but takes a while. Try doing it while he watches TV.

Also, I could be wrong, but I think the shampoo will not kill the eggs, so you will need to keep combing you, dd and dh, or do another shampoo when the eggs will have hatched.

Another vote for nitty gritty and conditioner

The chemicals are scary and horrible, esp for sensitive skin

Yep you will need to do the combing again next week.

Dd gets combed once a week, ever since she had them last year

Check the Hedrin bottle - mine says not for under 6 months, not 6 years. It doesn't have anything irritating in it - it suffocates the nits with a silicone based stuff. I think it's fab - but you need to do everyone and do it again in a week. And be prepared to repeat on a regular basis throughout primary school!

Thanks for the advice. Right, will keep combing through for now I think. Poor ds he gets eczema on his scalp sometimes too so even the combing has him crying! I think he is a bit wimpy like his mum though

Seeker - maybe it wasn't hedrin then, I'm sure it was 6yrs but I've thrown the bottle away...doh! I might ask the pharmacist when I'm next in there, she's very helpful.

I know people who use Hedrin on children with excema - it's quite oily and you need to shampoo it out in the morning (sometimes takes 2 shampoos) but if you use it carefully (and use lots) it works really well. I am a nit expert - my ds is a nit magnet!

LOL thanks seeker. This is the first time we have had it. Really hope it's the last
