2 yo ds constipated

Hi my ds seems to be constipated, this has been a problem on and off now for about three weeks.
It started off with him going about 3 days without pooing. Eventually he did manage to go and he seemed fine for about a week and then it started again. He would try to poo a number of times throughout the day but with no effect. I tried orange juice which seemed to help a little. He does'nt drink a lot. maybe a full cup of juice a day, i still breastfeed him so maybe that has something to do with it. When he tries to poo he automatically sits down, it must be more difficult to pass anything when he's like that. Sometimes there is a little staining of poo in his nappy when he's been trying. He also does'nt seem to try for long enough, he strains for a few seconds then gets distracted and stops. This is really beginning to get to me, i suffer from health anxiety and i'm trying not to imagine that something serious is wrong with him. At the moment he has'nt passed a proper poo since saturday when he went twice. He was also sick on saturday night and has'nt been eating much for a while so probably not much there to push out.

just hoping that there others who can relate to this and advise what to do. I did mention it my HV but did'nt really find her very helpful.

I also meant to mention that he does'nt seem to be suffering any discomfort with this.

My ds used to suffer from this as well at the same age. He would occasionally have blood in his nappy where he'd torn a little bit because the poo was so hard . It's very common, though, so please don't worry.

The things that worked for us were

  • getting him to drink much more than he was (his favourite was apple juice, but orange juice is good, water, milk, squash, anything that helps increase the amount of liquid going in). Siomply doing that should help lots.
  • ensure he eats lots of fruit and veg, and has plenty of fibre in his diet (wholemeal bread, weetabix, rice etc). I introduced lots of meals made with lentils, and we cut right back on bananas and egg as both made things worse.
  • you can get the GP to prescribe lactulose, which will help, but I'd try the other dietary stuff first.

I'm sure others will come as well to reassure you. HTH

My d has had chronic constipation for 18mth,if your child has a good diet already i wud go to the gp for lactolose or movicol(movicol usually only given if lactolose, senna or laxoberal doesnt work). My d became scared to poo and so it became more of a problem, i wud try and nip it in the bud before it becomes a problem x
Dont worry i know its hard to say cos i used to be dead stressed out about it x

You could blend the prunes and use them in other dishes (e.g. porridge), I've even used them in cake mix in lieu of milk/water.

hi, just thought i'd update, my ds had 2 very large bowel movements this morning so hopefully that has cleared the obstuction. I'd been giving him lots of red grapes over the last couple of days so don't know if thats what did the trick or not. Will definately try the prunes as would really like to avoid medication of any kind if at all possible.

Thanks to everyone for replying.
