ds2 4 weeks has been prescribed ranitadine for silent reflux. Will be starting it tomorow but wondering when is the best time to give it to him? He has to have it 3 times a day but wondering if best before feed, way before feed etc? ds1 was given this but didnt help him when he was a baby so want to try to get this to work with ds2!

hi. my son has been on ranitidine for silent reflux for a few months now, it's really helped him (after infant gaviscon and domperidone did nothing). he only has it twice a day, and our paediatrician advised just to give morning and evening and not to worry about whether it was before or after a feed. i initially gave it during/towards the end of a feed, thinking that this might be easier on his stomach and give us the chance for a last bit of milk to take the taste away - but TBH he doesn't seem to care, and lately I've sometimes forgotten to prepare the syringe and done it after a feed to no ill effect.

you need to give before a feed IF you can

it is very weight dependent so as your DS gains weight you need to get the dose adjusted accordingly

We gave it in EBM, but dd was on the occasional bottle from early on, so it was fairly easy. She hated the syringe, and learnt fast to spit it out so we were losing half the bottle before we'd even begun...so we started giving it in her milk. GP said that was fine, so did consultant.

She was also on Domperidone, so we gave them both together...is your ds on Ranitidine alone?

If it doesn't work/help, do tell your GP or whoever has prescribed...there are stronger meds available. Good luck, hope it helps!

ds1 had a few meds that didnt work and ended up on omeperazole and domperdone. ds2 is on neocate milk which has improved him a bit. The trouble is he is very windy too and has trouble getting rid of it, so did ds1 which was why he ended up on the domperidone as a gut motility.

im so hoping this works.. he isnt very settled when he is asleep, we have an amby bed which has helped but will often wake in pain

My ds improved a lot with ranitidine.

Give it before a feed as it tastes vile. I used to give it before 1st feed, mid-afternoon and bedtime.

The dose will need increasing as he grows.

I've found that if giving stuff in a syringe, mid feed best, as beginning, cross that you're not offering milk, end, done with sucking, will play with it.

But see what works for you.

Wasn't instant for dd2, at least not full effect - but steadily improved over a week or so.

My DS was being kept awake by reflux until 1am (he'd fall asleep upright on us, then wake a few minutes later screaming in pain). We started on Ranitidine (also he was on Gaviscon) and on the 2nd night, he fell asleep at 9pm and woke at 3am for a feed. He's slept through ever since. Difficult whether it was the Ranitidine working, as he was also on 12th week too (i.e. could have been colic, but he showed other reflux symptoms - was gagging, coughing, hiccuping, projectile sick etc).
I used to give before a feed - he was most hungry then, and could feed him straight away to take away taste. Also, very selfishly, was easier and less stressful for us to get it out of the way and could relax for the feed. It worked for us that way anyhow.
We found syringing into cheeks worked best, as most difficult to be spat out that way.
Good luck

ranitadine will take around 7 days to work

when DS had it he was like a different baby after around a week

he was on it until he was 6 months (ish) so around 4.5 months in total

we stopped giving it on the advice of the Paedeatrician

My DD has just finished taking it after a year and a half of having it twice a day. It really really worked after some pretty nasty problems caused by her reflux and the other meds she is on, she finally stopped being sick and ate normally. I was nervous about taking her off it but she has (touch wood) been ok. She had constipation pretty badly too which seems to have improved since coming off (sorry not trying to worry you just that I didn't realise that was a side effect till recently as we didn't get leaflets with it from the hospital).
