Advice on squint + glasses - any professionals?

I don't know if there's anyone on here these days who is an optometrist or similar these days. I've seen threads in the past where very generous professionals offer their opinions and as I am having a bit of a wobble abut what to do I was hoping there might be someone similar around now.

DD (8) has an outward squint in one eye. She had one round of patching for 9 months, this finished 6 months ago when she was discharged as her vision had improved (to one line of difference between them on the test) and the squint as a result had become less frequent and noticeable.

Over the last few months I noticed the squint becoming more prominent again so re-referred to the eye hospital and we were seen again. There was a long wait for the appointment so in the meantime I took her to the optician who gave us glasses with a very small prescription. They did state that they wouldn't always give out glasses at this small prescription, so if DD found they weren't helping, we could get rid of them without worrying, but they may help her squint.

Since having the glasses (she's had them for 4 weeks), she has not squinted whilst she has been wearing them. As soon as they come off, her eye wanders.

We had our appointment at the eye hospital and they have said her vision is worse (three lines between the eyes now), and she needs patching again, which we have started.

However, they have also said the glasses are making no difference to her vision and they think she shouldn't wear them, despite that they stop her squinting. They spent a good 20 mins at the appointment trying to make her squint whilst she had the glasses on, and when she finally did, it was shown as proof that the glasses were not effective.

Now, I am confused, and I don't know what to do for the best. If the glasses are no good, we will get rid. But if they stop her squinting, isn't this good? I really don't know what I am talking about, I know. I am aware that I may not have had the best advice from the opticians (or maybe the hospital), and I don't know my arse from my elbow.

I would love to avoid eye surgery for DD, but at this point her squint goes out too far for exercises and she has little control over it. I am considering going to another opticians to get another opinion, or should I just go with what the eye hospital said?

If you have got this far, I applaud you! Thanks in advance if anyone has any advice!
