5year old itching head without lice!

My son is 5 and has been itching his head on/off for a week or so. I have checked and combed his hair with the nitty gritty comb and cannot see lice. (I am usually good at spotting them and my son is white blonde so easy to spot when he had them two years ago).

Since yesterday the itching has got worse. He woke up itching in the night around the ears and neck. I nit combed again this morning but found absolutely nothing!

There is no sign of irritation or eczema or anything on his scalp.

So what could be causing it?

At first, I thought it was the heat but it was a lot cooler yesterday and his itching was worse.

Advice?

I am tempted to buy a bottle of Hedrin. The kind you leave in over night just to make sure.

I wonder could he have picked up one or two live headlice that are creeping about in the hair. Just when you say around the ears and back of neck, that is where they go first.
My son had this the 2nd time he had nits. A friend who was visiting had 'advanced' nits but parents never noticed, turned out the child was absolutely crawling when we suggested they might have a look. So we had the itching and red spots on the scalp and then I found one at least large adult one (they scurry away fairly fast from the examination spots). Sorry! If it were me I'd get the Hedrin.

Can you see the bites?
When I do the nitty gritty, I use half of bottle of cheap conditioner on DS's head, so whatever is there can't move, pass the comb through the hair and every time clean it in folded toilet paper so it is very easy to see or sport the tiniest dot.
