Colic symptoms

I think my newborn has colic but the last 24 hours has been a bit different. He is 4 weeks old tomorrow and we are first time parents so i am obviously concerned when he is distressed for long periods of time. Normally the colic symptoms start early evening and last till about 11pm but last night it didn't start till bedtime...actually about 1am...he started pulling up his knees and pedalling. As the night went on it got worse and typically colic but has continued today. He is burping and pooing/pumping but still is distressed...is it the colic or is it something else? Hate seeing him so distressed and not able to help him. We are using infacol but I don't know if it's helping...however I'm uneasy about stopping it in case it is helping! Any suggestions gratefully received...paranoid mother!

Hi Mimzey, wanted to answer your post because I went through something similar with DD. First, I want to say, THIS TOO SHALL PASS, even though I know right now it seems like an endless problem.

Secondly, have you looked into silent reflux? It has a lot of the same symptoms of colic but actually it's acid reflux which is hurting baby, rather than wind. Your GP can prescribe something more suitable if they think this could be the case. (Although at 4 weeks I'm not sure what baby can have...so best to talk to your HV or GP about that!) Anyway, good luck and hope DS feels better soon.

Thanks for that...must admit I was wondering if reflux could be something to do with it.
I have HV coming tomorrow so will ask her about it. Know they do gaviscon for infants but like you say, whether he can have it yet I don't know. He's also started being sickie but is still feeding well, in fact I think he's going through a growth spurt at the same time!
Just horrible listening to him being so distressed! Can't help but worry when it's your first.

Ooh being sickie is another big sign it's reflux. Also if he seems more distressed laying down on his back rather than being upright. Hope you get some answers!

Can ask what DD and DS mean...im new to all this mumsnet stuff and haven't a clue what all the abbreviations mean lol.

My ds and dd had colic I actually think dd had reflux but was long ago and doctors just said it was colic!
I bought i medicine called colief and it was a miracle cure for dd, it was quite expensive but it was worth it
I don't know if you can get it on prescription now but I honestly recommend it

Thanks for that! I have had a look online at colief and it does sound like a good thing to try...only problem is it says to try and give it 30 mins before feeds and I'm breastfeeding on demand so it will be difficult. Did u bottle or breast feed?

My ds is 3 weeks old today and has been prescribed infant gaviscon from 3 days ago and the difference in him is amazing.
Recommend asking and giving it a try - he's having half a sachet an evening mixed with cooled boiled water and served with a call old syringe if you're formula feeding you just mix it with a bottle. Noticed a difference from the 2nd night, he was soo stressed out between 9pm and 3 am and throwing up his feeds, they even smelt acidic.

I bottle fed but it was a nightmare back then as you had to make it up like 6 hours before feed (I can't actually remember time scale it was 10 years ago lol) but it was a pain but by god it worked I'll have a look and see what it says about breastfeeding

Express a few tablespoons of breast milk into a sterilised container. Add four drops of Colief and feed it back to the baby using a sterilised plastic spoon. Immediately start breastfeeding as normal.

Hi my dd is going to be five weeks old on Thursday and has the exact same symptoms. Did u try colief and if so did it work? So upsetting watching her suffer!

No I haven't tried colief yet...HV said it was ok to use infacol and gripe water together and suggested I give infacol before feed as normal then give dose of gripe with the feed before he starts suffering with the colic...for me this is early morning and early evening feeds. I've been putting it in a bottle to give it to him but he keeps choking on it which is very scary so I've bought a medicine dummy which has been so much easier and he's happier taking it! It's definitely been better!
