Blood in my baby's nappy - PLEASE HELP!?

Hello, this is my first ever post. My 4 month old has been producing blood in her stools for the last 5 weeks if not longer. She is exclusively BF. I have been to A and E, my GP three times and spoken to my HV and they are all clueless as to what the issue is. After my first visit to A and E they tested her stool for infection, which was all clear, and suggested I went on a dairy free diet. I am also a Ceoliac myself so for the last 3 weeks I have been gluten, egg, dairy and soy free but still no change. If anything its getting worse not better! I do have a referral to a paediatrician but the waiting list is long and I'm worried they still won't have the answer. We have also tried to give her hypoallergenic formula but she outright refuses it. PLEASE HELP!!!! I am desperate!

Hi there OP. We're going to move this over to child health where you should get more responses. We hope all is ok with your baby and you get an answer soon.

As a baby I had surgery for intestinal intersussception, effectively a blockage of small intestine due to a collapsing of a small part. Blood in faeces was the only symptom. It is rare, and I was lucky the doctor had heard of it.

Please ask them to ensure her digestive system is not blocked. Being able to poo doesn't mean its not collapsed.

Could it be coming from your breastmilk? I have a condition called rusty pipe syndrome which is harmless for the baby, but does leave blood in sick or the nappy.

I hope you find out soon what the problem is Flowers

I think if it's getting worse, you have no choice but back to A&E. I really hope she's ok. Flowers

Sorry, but that should not be waiting for a routine appointment. I'm betting the referral letter has gone into the appointments system, and hasn't been triaged by an actual doctor. If they have no rapid access clinic slots (not all paeds departments run them, though many do), then it's still possible to call it an admission, and bring them in for assessment.

I would strongly suggest that you get your baby seen again, tell them how worried you are, and ask them to actually ring paediatrics. If you didn't get seen within a couple of days max, I would be very surprised (and rather disgusted).

In the meantime, keep a record of all poo, as well as the blood. How often/colour/consistency of pooing, whether the blood is on the surface of the poo, or mixed in, whether there's any straining etc

This may well all turn out to be pretty innocent, but sadly not something that can be sorted out over the internet. And needs checking out properly.

So after meeting with the paediatrician they have decided my babe is allergic to an antigen in milk, including breast milk :( Apparently a very rare diagnosis. The only option is hypoallergenic formula. After a day of screaming the house down she finally took the bottle (its the bottle she hated not the milk) and has passed a normalish stool (Yellowy green, no blood at all) She also has her rosey cheecks back rather than looking ghostly. I am feeling raw and grief stricken because I have had to give up the BF. I am also very engorged and in pain, but at least my babe is on the meand. Thank you all for your help and support!
