Would these symptoms give you cause for concern?

ok so these symptoms on their own don't really give much concern but altogether could it be something to worry about. Baby is 6 months.

  1. permanently congested, but never snotty unless has a cold.
  2. wheezey
  3. fast breathing whenever he gets a cold or after crying.
  4. has never slept longer than 3 hours straight.
  5. slightly raised platelet count
  6. hasn't doubled his birth weight since birth.
  7. poor weight gain in the last few months and occasional weight loss.
  8. sometimes when he cries he looks absolutely petrified and panicked
  9. very dry skin
  10. constantly itching eyes and left ear
  11. painful trapped wind.
can't think of anything else at the moment.
he has a paediatric appointment next month but just wondered if anyone has any thoughts?

Appointment next month is too far away in my opinion can't you get an urgent appointment? out of what you've listed i'd be worried about the ff:

The poor weight gain
The weight loss
constant itching
Raised platelet count

Iwould definitely strive to get an earlier appointment. I would also contact the Health visitor, for an urgent visit. Don't wait a month!

Yes, I would be concerned!

I've read 100s of threads on MN about poorly babies and not been concerned....

ok, what do I say to HV, just list the symptoms to them and see what they say?
What would your concerns be for?
I've always had a feeling something wasn't quite right Sad

Have you had his ears checked for infections? Ds had ear infections constantly from about 3 months until he had grommets in at 20 months. He didn't sleep through because of the pain and was bashing his ear and eyes. He also had (I think) raised platelet count at various points when he had blood tested due to viral rashes that didn't fade under glass.

He did gain weight though, because when he was ill the only thing he wanted to do was feed for comfort.

I was wondering about ear infections but wouldn't he get a temperature?
also the poor weight gain is a mystery because he does feed well Hmm

Sorry I've been away. OP i'd just list the symptoms as you have here, possibly starting with the four that jump out at me and see what she says. The other symptoms all seem very normal for a young baby, congestion, wheeziness etc so they could cut you off mid sentence, not sleeping much etc, but those four are to me, warning signs of something else.

How do you know about the platelet count? Presumably you've seen a paed or a gp at some point to get the blood test.

What did they say? Were they concerned, arrange follow up?

If you're in the system being dealt with already call the appropriate medic or their secretary, explain what has changed since the last appt and ask to get the next moved forward.

Micah he's had a few episodes of bronchiolitis since birth so they originally did a blood test to check his immune system. platelet count was raised so they repeated and it was still raised so referred him to paediatrician which is the appointment I'm waiting for.

Ds did get a raised temperature with ear infections, which was how i knew he had them. However apparently they don't always.

Doesn't the platelet count just mean they've had an infection? I thought that was what I was told. And if it was raised it wasn't a major concern, it was if it was low that it could show nasties.

I'm thinking allergy/intolerance

dd had many of those symptoms she was intolerant to milk protein.

I'd not wait til next month

Are they sure it was bronchiolitis that he had? Did they do tests to rule out other things?

RobotHamster · 13/05/2015 22:38

And when you say fast breathing, how fast do you mean?

robothamster they didn't do any tests. his resps rate goes to 74 easily at rest when he's poorly. when he was born his resps were in the 80s for a few days

deewee they were slightly concerned re the platelets as they were outside the normal raised level but only just. I think it's probably down to him having various infections but can be a sign of anaemia apparently.

Giles how did they diagnose the milk protein allergy?

They didn't. I did. I suspected from early on and basically had to push a locum onto a milk trial where miraculously all the symptoms went away. no gunky eyes no congestion no really dry mottled skin. She slept. no struggling to poo or pass wind. so refusal to drink, no straining and grunting just a few mouthfuls in.

that pretty much confirmed it for me and them and they luckily treated her as CMPI from then on and allowed me to keep the prescription.

left to the drs shed have been left on medication for reflux and movical..

sorry that's probably not what you wanted to hear Flowers

Sorry to read this Elle. It's not nice to have a poorly child. It's good you've got the paediatrician appt coming up. I'm thinking allergies, asthma etc. my dd was quite unwell aged 2 to 3 with bad breathing regular coughs which took us to a and e but now she is school aged seems to be growing out of it and/or benefitting from being on an asthma inhaler programme. We also use granules called montelucast when she starts a cold which seems to stop it transferring onto her chest. All of this was prescribed by the paediatriciAn. Hope your little one feels better soon and you get some insight. I found the gps to be not so insightful so do push for a quicker consultant appt if you can.

Just to say I have a child with world record-beating ear infections. He was on antibiotics for 365 days. He never had a temperature. It's worth looking into esp given the terrified when crying. If the pressure in their ear changes it really upsets them.

Also look at adenoids, allergies.

Hope you get somewhere tmrw
