Penicillin and babies - help!

Hi,
DH and I are desperate... does anyone have experience of a 1-year-old on a penicillin variety for an inflamed upper respiratory tract? (close to tonsillitis)

DS has been on 5ml 4x a day for 3 days, slept for the first 2 days and has thankfully been awake all of today - much like his old self (sigh of relief from his parents!).
BUT...
... he now can't/won't go to sleep. He refused two naps today (v unusual) and has basically screamed since 7pm when we tried to put him to bed as normal.
He. Is. So. Tired.
DH read that penicillin can mask the pain, so DS now associates sleep with pain... DH is currently driving DS around in the car in the hope he'll go to sleep, something we haven't done since week 3 of his life!!!

Where have you read this? I've never heard of it.

Have you been giving calpol too if he's so unsettled?

I don't know, DH told me it after he'd been googling (while I was trying to get DS to sleep).

We gave Calpol in the end, yes - I hadn't been sure if you can give it at the same time as the antibiotic.

He's in a lot of pain this morning too: just woke up crying and his voice sounds hoarse Confused guess that's all the yelling from last night!

I'm a nurse and have never heard of it. Yes you can give calpol as it's just paracetamol so completely different from an antibiotic.

Don't forget you can give ibuprofen (Nurofen) too. Alternate it with calpol if you need to. If he's miserable then give it. All safe to have.

Thanks Smile we stuck with Calpol and he seems happier the last couple of days... still grumpy more than usual Confused but it's an improvement on Saturday night! Thank you for your advice xxx
