DD1, 6 next week, has had a cough for the last few weeks, and has been a bit tired. I think a combination of coughing at night, end of term and also started a new after school activity.

We have been off this week for half term, and we've kept it fairly quiet. She has been more emotional than usual. So far, so normal for a virus that is dragging on.

She has a low grade temp now, and is not very hungry. She is drinking. Very lethargic but improves when calpol kicks in.

Here's the thing...I've just counted her rspiratory rate, and normal for her age is 25-30/minute. Hers is 47/minute.

Should I be taking her to OOH or just keeping up with calpol and fluids? I'm generally quite laid back when it comes to usual childhood illnesses, but by the same token I don't want to be too blasé either!

Any advice greatly appreciated.

Does she seem to be taking 47 decent breaths (in and out evenly) per minute, or would you say they are shallow breaths? Are they calm or panty? Any unusual noise?

Is she unusually pale?

The standard advice is that if you're worried you should get her seen.

They're shallow but calm. She coughs if she tries to take a deep breath. She is pale, but not more than usual for being tired and poorly.

She seemed a little brighter before bedtime, I'm just not sure if 47 rpm is normal for a viral illness or time to be seen...

Is she tugging in on her neck when breathing? Does she seem to be using her tummy to breath rather than her chest
If yes then I would get her checked out ASAP.

I would get her checked could be a chest infection.

Could be chest infection (pleurisy / pneumonia). I would get it checked out.

Thanks for the advice, she seemed steady when she was sleeping, and woke up this morning feeling much better, no temperatures.

Phew!
