Squint

DS (4) has a squint that came on about 10 months ago.

He's been seen in the hospital. They initially said they don't do eye patches any more and treat with glasses instead. We had to go back for an eye test so they could give him a prescription for glasses.

The eye test showed that his eyesight itself is perfectly fine. They've given a small prescription for glasses anyway which they want to try for 6 weeks to see if there is any improvement. She said it's hardly worth giving but they like to try glasses first. If not, they'll be looking at surgery instead.

I thought this was quite drastic and surprised me. Does anyone know why they don't patch the unaffected eye any more? Are there no other treatments available other than surgery?

if his eyesight is fine then patching is pointless as the patch is supposed to help improve the eyesight in the other eye e.g. my dd had poorer sight in her left eye so wore a patch on her right eye to force the left eye to work properly. The patching stopped when the sight was pretty much equal in both eyes

If it is an issue with the muscles in his eye then surgery is probably the only option left. My dd still had a visible squint while wearing her glasses so got an eye op at age 4 to help straighten it.
