Another tooth decay thread

My almost 4 year old has been to the dentist today with what I thought was a chipped tooth only to be told he has tooth decay in that one tooth (Front) which is why a bit has broken off! The rest are ok.

I am gutted but now need to take extra care RE snacks and teeth cleaning.

He rarely has sweets but does eat a lot of fruit and loves chocolate. We do brush his teeth but it seems like we are just going to have to be extra vigilant. All juices are usually very diluted (Not cordials).

My question is - as it is only one tooth I wonder if because he chipped it previously could that have contributed to this particular tooth becoming decayed. Also he was on an antibiotic drip when he was born, for ten days, could this have an effect and should I mention this to the dentist in case his other teeth are similarly effected? Will this be an ongoing thing, effecting his second set as they come in?

I just feel like we have let him down. I have never had a filling (I am 44) but DH does.

:(

Don't beat yourself up, sounds like you take good care of his teeth, these things happen.

My DD had a filling last month she is 7 I was and am gutted still, I do all the same things as you, my dentist just said not to sweat it, keep doing what we are nothing more we can do.

I know how you feel though! I'm really vigilant with the brushing, I think I allowed her to brush her teeth unsupervised too much. My DS same diet etc but no fillings!

Thank you for replying. I feel a bit better today but still kicking myself for not keeping his teeth clean and worried about what else may be lurking in the future.

My DD had a couple of holes in her baby teeth when they came out (didn't notice them until they fell out - not visible as they were sort of on the inside bit that is next to the adjacent tooth IYSWIM) She didn't have sweets or sugary stuff, or juice just milk or water, brushed properly etc. Don't know how she got decay.

If it's any comfort - she's 25 now and doesn't have a single filling in any of her adult teeth. She did have that special coating put on them the used for people with a lot of ridges in the tooth surface - maybe ask about that for your little boy once his adult teeth come through Smile
