Operation for grommets

Can anyone tell me a bit about what the recovery is like? Or any tips? DD will be nearly 4.

The other thing is that we are due to fly, a 3 hour flight, just over a week later. At present I am expecting that DD will stay at home with her Grandma instead, although I don't know, as it might be a radical improvement than flying with very blocked pressured ears. My feeling is that it is too soon really, though, and better to be safe and keep her in familiar surroundings.

My DS got grommets a couple of months ago at 3.5yrs old. He was super pale coming home but ate and drank perfectly fine after the op. Had a big sleep that night and then was running round the next day. He faded a bit once the pain med had worn off and was a bit tired for about 3 days but apart from that completely normal. I was amazed as had expected a forlorn bed-ridden toddler for a week but not the case. You should be fine to fly too as ears with grommets don't need to equalise. Good luck with it all!

DD just had grommets in, but also tonsils and adenoids out - so it was a totally different kettle of fish, but just fyi they focused entirely on the tonsils and adenoids in terms of post-operative care and told me not even to worry about grommets.

Are you in UK If so a couple of things:

  1. look at the videos for children's operations on the John Radcliffe hospital website - they are brilliant to help her prepare for the 'special sleep' etc

  1. be aware that they sit her on your knee when they do the anaesthetic, and it's quite unsettling watching them suddenly conk out

  1. I think you should be absolutely fine to fly - check with consultant now in case

  1. hearing is AMAZING and your DD, if anything like mine, will blossom into different child over the week following op - DD sleeps better, has become a chatterbox, her social confidence has doubled and trebled, sheis happier and more confident and it's all just such a relief.

Good luck! Let me know if you have specific qs.

My DS had grommets just before he was 3. Really quick op, he was a bit groggy (and VERY hungry as had been nil by mouth!) that day, but next day was running around. He just had ibuprofen for a couple of days.

Made a HUGE difference to his speech really quickly, and increased his confidence. He is now a fabulous 6.

Agree with all the above posters :) I think you will be fine to fly, ask your consultant. for grommets only - it is a simple procedure.

Thanks so much all, that is very reassuring. I hope she does sleep better; that would be the icing on the cake if so!
