Just looking for others experience on this, 8.5 month dd has recently had a cold and last night started coughing up yellow phlegm and it got so bad she started choking at one point and I had to hit her on the back to get everything up. Been to gp this morning who says this is common and that dd won't choke on phlegm. As dd is my first I have no experience of this so please tell me if you have experienced this with your children as am feeling extremely anxious now!

My dd was like this as a newborn and when she was 6 weeks, I decided that it was less risky to put her sleeping on her stomach because I truly believed she would choke on the phlegm. Your dd mightn't take to sleeping on her front though.

Thanks for the reply. DD often rolls over and sleeps on her front so hopefully that will help. She started to choke when I was cuddling her after she woke up coughing so I'm hoping she'll be ok in her cot. As much as the doctor assured me that she won't choke I just can't help but worry.

I was the same, I was afraid that even if she didn't choke on the phlegm, it would cause her to gag and get sick and I was worried that if she was on her back at night that she would choke on the vomit. Anyway she grew out if it and it a healthy 6 yo who still sleeps on her fron!Smile

I hate it when they choke on phlegm it's so frightening, but I think the gagging is the reflex action that actually prevents them choking. Steam is good to loosen the phlegm and carvol, eucalyptus etc on a cloth in the room really helps too.

Feel so much better that it seems pretty normal, still scary though!
