Could this be an asthma attack in a 9mo??

Help please. Yesterday my 9mo ds had a horrible episode struggling to breathe. It was at 4pm ish, he was red, screechy and gasping for air, looked to me like he had a partial blockage in his windpipe but we banged his back and nothing came out. It lasted about 5 minutes, then he got a bit better and 10 minutes later he seemed fine again. There was definitely nothing in there, thought maybe mucous making him struggle but he has cows milk protein allergy and eczema, just got over a skin infection a couple of weeks ago. He does wake himself up
in the night with coughs but settles back to sleep, i thought this was normal. He has had one episode like this before a few weeks ago, similar time of day.

Any thoughts much appreciated.

It could be imo. But I dont think they give a definite diagnosis of asthma until a child is two. Up till then, they call it bronchilitis. Happy to be corrected by someone with more knowledge than myself.

I personally would take him to the gp.

Sounds more like an anaphylaxis shock, have you been trying new foods - my son had something similar and it was delayed reaction to egg. Think about new things in his environment - food, toys, cleaning products & medicines.

I would definitely get it investigated asap - they will take breathing issues especially at this age seriously. I would ask for an epipen just to be on the safe side until they have found a cause.

It could be asthma, but as other poster stated, they will not diagnose until two. But it sounds exactly like my sons episode, and I'm honestly not trying to scare you, but it could be more serious next time. Best take LO to GP and push hard for investigations.

Definitely go to the doctor. Even though they can't diagnose asthma, they can give you a baby puffer in case it happens again. My ds has this due to recurrent chest infections and he sometimes struggles with his breathing as a result.

One it's unusual for asthma to come on that quickly and then get better again within 10 mins with no treatment, so to me it doesn't sound like asthma.

I'd def go to the doctor though.

Sounds more like an allergic reaction to me, asthma attacks don't tend to end so fast (my dc's have both allergies and asthma). Do you have an epi/jext pen? I think you need to go to the docs to discuss.

Others could be right. It could be an allergic reaction. I notice he has had a skin infection as well.
Best to see the doctors as soon as you can.

Thankyou so much. Spoke to health visitor who said go to gp. Went to go who was great, listened a lot and said it might be a reflux issue which is more common in babies with food allergies and eczema. He hare being in his back. Got gaviscon to go in his milk feeds. Can't think of new foods that he could be exposed too that would cause anaphylactic shock reaction but will look into this, very scary..
