My poor ds smells

For the last week ds (turned 9 last month) has had a horrible smell. It smells musty/dirty and is coming from his skin (his clothes/towel/hair/breath are all fine). He is showering everyday and I've made sure he's had a good lather all over, comes out smelling ok and within a couple of hours the smell is back. It's not sweaty/BO smelling at all however I've been encouraging body spray.

I have made a drs appointment but they have nothing until next Tuesday and the smell is so bad I am worried about him at school. Has anyone got any ideas?

Has he got a chest infection or similar? I notice a very particular smell from people with a bad chest.

If he's using body spray, make sure it's antiperspirant, not just deodorant (deodorant is just a mask). I'd hot wash his clothes too, to kill any germs lurking.

Hope he sorts out soon, poor mite :(

Musty is exactly how I'd describe what dp/dd and ds1 smell like when they sweat.

It's like the smell you get on a building site, dusty and cementy smelling. Very peculiar and until i met dp i'd never met anyone who had that sort of smell when sweaty!

Thank you both, will get him some antiperspirant and see if that helps at all. It is an all over smell (not particularly armpits) which is what made me think it wasn't sweat but the musty building site smell is a good description!

Good idea about hot washing his clothes to be on the safe side. He hasn't got a chest infection but I made the doctors appointment as it does smell "poorly" to me?

Could he be constipated?

I found that ds stank to high heaven when he was constipated.

Just a quick update, thanks for all the suggestions.

Enjoyingscience - turns out he has a bad chest infection, only spotted by the dr after me suggesting she checked his chest - thanks so much! Is midway through antibiotics and the smell has almost gone. He still doesn't have much of a cough so I'd have never known!

Wow!! Goes off to sniff the family thoroughly.

Shock

That's amazing! MN really comes up trumps at times Smile

Well done enjoyingscience.

That's really interesting actually, dp has asthma and dd who most often has the cementy smell has a dodgy chest too!

So glad he's on the mend now anchovies, that's brilliant news :)
