Dd has been ill the last 3 days with fever, and is cutting all four molars top and bottom as well as canines. She's in a lot of pain and hasn't eaten much, anything hard you give her she cries and turns her face away. She is 16 months. She's been having normal wet nappies and a couple of loose ones but poo looks normal etc. mil phoned earlier and said I should take her to GP tomorrow but I just felt like I wanted to get her seen now. No rash or severe drowsiness but she is extremely clingy and hot with cold hands and feet. Dh has now taken her to A&E to be checked. Does anyone have any experience of this at all? I'm so worried :(

She has also been drowsy and falls asleep when being held for a while although is very easy to wake.

Just sounds like average teething to me?

Hot young child/baby with cold hands and feet is perfectly reasonable to get checked at A and E, They can be symptoms of serious illness(though can also be just a rotten temp) assuming she has had appropriate fever reducing meds with no effect?

Hopefully sod's law says she will perk up in the waiting room.

I would have taken her to the GP or out of hours doctors. I don't think it is A&E worthy as it seems like classic teething.

Hopefully they will put your mind at rest and your little girl will be better soon.

Sounds relatively normal to me, either teething or a bug. How high is her fever? Is it coming down with calpol?

Guess I am missing something. What is her temp? Is calpol bringing it down?

Sorry if I don't sound sympathetic, I know how horrid it is when they're upset. But it does sound pretty standard.

It sounds quite normal to me, its horrible for them especially when they are cutting a few at the same time, your poor dd :(

Sounds like teething. Or perhaps ear infection.

Out of hours or Emdoc might be appropriate. If the fever isn't coming down between doses of paracetamol or ibuprofen.

Sorry yeah she hasn't really responded to calpol tbh, and you know I didn't even think of out of hours. She is just not herself and I don't actually know her accurate temperature. Has anyone's child lasted 4 days or more with severe teething pains?

Have you tried iprobrufen?

I wouldn't worry about not eating aslong as she is drinking - I wouldn't want to eat if I had teeth coming through either!

Never thought of ear infection. I thought that was generally accompanied by discharge from the ears, child grabbing them etc. illnesses are bastards :(

One of my three had temp for several days wthi teething.

Recently my youngest had temp when he was brewing chicken pox and pre spots. And all of them have had temps with various other bugs and colds (lots doing the rounds at the moment).

Is rotten. Worth getting checked out by doctor (ears query) but not A&E. the NHS website www.nhs.uk is pretty good at giving info re: what constitutes an emergency, and there's a symptom checker that flags up what level of care (I.e. self care/GP/urgent care centre/A&E in ascending order) might be appropriate.

Dd was plagued by ear infections from age 1 -3 years. She never had discharge though and didn't really do ear grabbing. Would fall over a lot, be hot and miserable.

Thankyou pooka. I'm hoping it is just teething

Sounds like normal teething to me too. My DS really suffered when his molars came through, they're big buggers!

He was very clingy and would cuddle to sleep on my knee a lot. I think it was because his sleep at night was disturbed.

What was her temp?

Report
RandallPinkFloyd · 29/01/2013 22:55

Sorry, missed the last few posts. Do you know roughly what her temperature was?

Report
steppemum · 29/01/2013 23:01

you do need to get a thermometer. Ear thermometer is best

The difference between hot and miserable and 39 and hot and miserbale and 41 is an ambulance!
You can make much better judgements and it is much less stressful to have concrete information to work from

Hope she is ok and feeling better soon.
