Please hold my hand. Baby has cancer

(395 Posts)

Thread title says it all.

One week ago I mentioned to dh (a doc) that dd 14 months had a tight tummy. He examined her, felt a lump. We went in to a & e, had a scan, they saw lump 13.5 cm across.

We've been referred to GOSH and they are amazing. Poor baby has had to endure scans, GAs, tests galore.

Latest is that it's either hepatoblastoma or germ cell tumour. CT scan on Monday to see if it's spread to the lungs. She has a central line in now so will start chemo within a week or so.

We have absolutely amazing friends and the support of our faith (we are Catholic) but it's like a completely weird dream. Our world has come crashing down.

We have four older children too (12, 10, 8 and 4).

Btw I'm a long term MNer but have name changed because I've got a one track mind now.

I just wanted to send my live, am thinking off you x

If its any consolation, Joe has been a lot more clingy since treatment started, and his has worked well so far. It is hard when you have them permanently attached to you but I wouldn't necessarily take it as a bad sign just yet.

Hope she copes ok this weekend.

Thanks all. trazzle, that's useful to know, and my friend whose father has cancer said that he's grizzly on chemo too. Fair enough.

Poor dh just gets all medical and is constantly aware of how big the tumour is (apparently it got smaller after chemo but is now growing again) and what her respiratory rate is doing (sometimes slower, sometimes faster -- if the latter because the wretched tumour is producing more CO2). Whereas my mood is purely based on hers (probably illogically).

Enough rambling...

Thinking of you and praying for you this weekend.

Hi Praying

I have never posted on MN before but your posts made me want to pass on my thoughts and prayers. I have a 10 month old and so can picture some of the gorgeous baby cuteness you describe your beautiful Beatrice doing. I will ensure you are my in my prayers at church on Sunday. Make sure you do everything to look after yourself too. X

Thinking of you all and sending love and strength xxx

Thank you all so much.

In my thoughts, I can't begin to comprehend what daily life is like for you but sending love and best wishes.

Thanks donkeys. It's a lot easier now that we have the diagnosis and a treatment plan. We have our little routine and because chemo is every 2 weeks, it comes round quickly and gives us a focus.

Daily life is quite a challenge though since poor darling Beatrice is understandably very clingy so even getting dressed takes some doing. Also, I'm home educating my older ones so fitting that in is quite tricky. They're getting quite an education in IV lines, immunity etc.

Have seen you post elsewhere on this board. You are so brave and encouraging to other MNers in similar circumstances. Take care.

Adding my prayers for Beatrice. Love and strength to you.

Just want to add my prayers. My hand is here to hold and I'm sending you a truck load of love.
How is your darling girl today?

Thinking of you and Beatrice

Aw, thanks donkeys -- honestly, though, I'm not brave, just doing what I have to do and what any mother would do. I'm glad I'm encouraging -- I've got two friends whose children have had cancer (and survived) and they've been indescribably kind and helpful so I want to pay it forward -- though a little post on MN doesn't compare with what these amazing friends have done for me.

Beatrice has been amazing today! Cheekily climbing up on the coffee table then dancing. Actually, dancing on tables, that's my girl!!

She's got a hearing test on Tues to see if chemo is affecting her hearing (apparently this drug always causes some hearing loss) -- they may have to adjust the dose according to what her hearing is like. Last time they struggled to do the test because even though DH got her to sleep by a miracle, her breathing was too noisy for the test.

Then seeing the consultant on Thursday, ultrasound to see what the tumour is doing, then 33 hours of chemo.

I'll be glad to get another dose of chemo inside her but am desperate for good news re hearing and the effects of chemo on the tumour so far -- clutching at any hands on offer..,

Hands here smile

She sounds totally adorable!!

Is there anyone you can rope in to do some homeschooling?

My friend has her Dad doing science with them and her mum doing maths/baking and their does a bit with them too, mostly space projects grin

There's a lot to be said for unschooling too.

Dear Praying. Feel almost embarrassed to be posting here as I know NOTHING I have gone through compares to what you and your family are going through. I did though nearly lose a child, and the horrors associated with that are never gone from my mind; but more to the point, I couldn't read this without sending you love, prayers, and hope. Also to say how fab the post today about her dancing on tables issmile Just a beautiful post.

Also wanted shout from MN rooftops - as I know how very easy it is to lose sight of this when you are 'in it' - that you need to remind yourself what an amazing parent you are being right now to your beautiful little girl (& her siblings too!). Truly, hugest virtual love and hugs, and the very best of wishes xxxx PS CERTAIN I won't be the first person to have said this, but DO try where can to snatch even the smallest amount of 'you' time (have to fess I wasn't exactly brilliant at this, but know helped when I did).

Best wishes and prayers and love to you xx

Hope hearing test goes well and isn't too tricky to complete. Dancing on the coffee table, superb.

Thanks for hand holding as always.

Hearing is normal! Woohoo!! Such a relief. Not out of the woods yet as there are 4 more courses of chemo to get through, but it's so encouraging.

chocolatecakeystuff Tue 22-Jan-13 23:00:04

Hey, I've just come across this thread, and wanted to send my love to you all.

Also I know its not the same by my dd is hearing impaired ( she's got a degenerative neuro condition) & its amazing how little it actually effects them. Hearing aids these days are amazing & you wouldn't know dd can't hear very well. Just wanted to say that when you come through this (and I pray your dd's hearing isn't effected) but if it is there's tons of support & its not as dibilitating as you might think x x x

Stay strong & thinking of your dd & your family x x x

Thanks chocolate, that's really helpful. We're certainly not out of the woods as she's only had 2 out of the 6 rounds of chemo. But we're hopeful.

And I see I wrote exactly the same thing above blush. Seems like as far as cliches go, we're not out of the woods yet...!
