Dd age 6 feels rubbish and has a temp of 40.7 (came down to 39 after paracetamol)
No other symptoms, should I assume it's a virus?

I would keep up paracetamol and brufen and just keep a close eye on her.

cold wet socks also help to keep temperature down.
it is good that it goes down with meds.
keep an eye on her all through the night, try to get fluids into her (ice lollies are great when they are boiling).

I would head for the Docs, just in case.

Take a urine sample with you, it might be a urine infection and the only way to treat it is with antibiotics.

Why is everything a virus these days when you go to the Docs, our 3 year old has had cold after cold since March and it takes weeks to clear then a few days without then got again....however when we do manage to get antibiotics it clears it within days, but we are constantly told it's a virus! Sick of Docs at the mo...

DD had the same thing for the past 2 day, 40.4 tops, paracetamol didn't do much, nurofen did. Took to the doc & was told it was a virus.. it passed after 48 hours
hope she's better soon

Fevers should last no longer than 3 days. Any more and it may be a bacterial infection which has come in after the virus as weakened the immune system or it was bacterial all along. That said, most febrile illnesses are caused by viruses.

Unless a child is very worryingly ill, or has signs of a bacterial illness, (painful weeing, very sore throat, breathing problems) theres not much point taking them to the GP.
