Please reassure me about DS's fever

I'm sat up with DS (2.5), he's got a fever (39.2C) and I'm scared it's going to be another chest infection and hospital visit. I've given him something for it and I'm just waiting for his temperature to go down. His breathing is fast/shallow but not laboured (ribs look ok, bit under his neck not going in).

It's amazing how logic goes out of the window - last time he had a temperature he ended up in hospital on IV antibiotics with pneumonia (then he got chicken pox, it wasn't the greatest of times!). It was a while ago (April) and he's been healthy since. So although I'm usually very relaxed about the DC, I'm just paranoid about this now.

He had two chest infections this year, the second involving A&E and in both cases there was no cough etc leading up to it - just the onset of a fever and increasingly laboured breathing.

I guess I'd just like some reassurance and a bit of company. Something to help make up for the fact that I've only had four hours sleep tonight too! Although at least parenthood has taught me to see four hours as a pretty luxuriant stretch...

Phone nhs direct, better advice than putting a message on the Internet! (tbh he sounds ok, Ds1 gets similar temperatures when fighting a virus)

He's doing a bit better now, thank you for asking. His temperature hadn't gone down after an hour so I rang NHS direct and by the time the nurse rang back it had gone down to 38.5c.

The nurse said it is probably viral but to keep an eye on him etc. I guess that having been down the chest infection road before I'm concerned it could be another one, but at least I know what to look out for.

I'm just going to change his nappy then I'm going to wake DH up, hand him the thermometer with instructions to keep checking DS's temperature, and I'll be off to bed to catch up on sleep. DS may join me though as he hasn't had much sleep either.
