Hi, I know there are other old threads about Perthes, but they do seem rather old and inactive so just wanted to start a new one to see if anyone out there is currently dealing with Perthes with their child. My son, 5 and a half (6 in November) was diagnosed about 4 weeks ago with Perthes in his right hip. We went back today for more x-rays and to talk to the Consultant and have come away really knocked for six. He has really severe Perthes, his whole femoral head is involved and is now almost gone and it's also not in a good position, it is "extruding" or whatever the term is which means it's coming out of the socket. His prognosis looks pretty poor given the full femoral head involvement and also the fact the Consultant says the bone is not in the right place to have any chance of regrowing in anything like a reasonable shape. So ina few weeks we have to take our poor little boy for an arthrogram (under general anaesthetic, dye injected into hip for better imaging) with the prospect then of major surgery soon. Major surgery as in a femoral osteotomy, completely cutting the thigh bone in two to twist the top section around to hopefully fit it in the socket better...I just cannot bear to think of my poor little boy going through all this especially as the surgery is not even a guarntee of a better outcome. He could still end up with a terribly deformed hip joint, early osteoarthritis and an early hip replacement etc etc...it's all so miserable and I'm finding it hard to be even remotely optimistic about this. Just wanted to vent really and see if there is anyone else out there currently going through this.
