Any experience of Pyloric Stenosis?

After weeks of hospitals messing her around my friend's 5 week old baby has just been diagnosed with this.

The poor little thing has lost the little weight gained since birth and is now below birth weight.

My friend is understandably upset as she was referred to hospital with possible PS weeks ago but the hospital disregarded this and didn't even scan the baby.

Just wondering about length of surgery, what recovery was like etc.

And some lovely positive stories for my friend please

My friend's son had this (I think). If it's what I'm thinking of, the sphincter muscle at the bottom of the stomach tightens so no food can get out of the stomach into the gut and it just all comes up again in a projectile manner!

He had the op which was carried out through a tiny cut right next to his navel. I can't remember how long he was in hospital - 1 or 2 nights I think, but as soon as it was done he was so much happier and started piling on the weight. Now, about 11 months later, he's a happy boy, no ill effects and just a tiny scar in the folds of his belly button.

Same as GALENA, my friend's ds had the same and also the same age had this. Perfectly fine after the op and started feeding ok awell.

As you can imagine she is worried sick, especially given that she knew the baby was ill for weeks before getting this diagnosis.

Hello, I had pyloric stenosis forty years ago. And here I am - mother of three with a hearty appetite!!! No sign it ever happened. Nice wobbly tummy these days too.....

A friend of mine had two babies with this - both operated on and sorted out with the minimum of fuss. It will be very hard for your friend to see her son have an op but he will recovery quickly and be so much better than he has ever been to date.

I had this 45 years ago. Even then my parents had real problems trying to get the medics to take it seriously despite the fact my Mum was a nurse. They tried treating it first with some sort of muscle relaxant at first then operated.

I was always very proud of my scar when young as it made me feel 'special' however i think they do a much neater job now. Everything will be fine.

Heya!

My DS had this, also diagnosed at 5 weeks. The good news is your friends baby should be feeding normally within 12 hours.

My son still has scarring around his belly button (he's 1yr 10mo)but has only had 3 bouts of sickness total since he had the Py op. He's tall and solid and you'd never be able to tell he had been poorly.

My husband had the op 29 years ago and is fine too.
